2 rolls on 1 reel

Hey guys,
I am back from my holidays and now I am facing with developing a sack of 120 b/w film. I was thinking to wind two rolls of film on one reel, one after the other and develop them together. I have a Paterson tank with plastic reels.
The questions are:
– can the 2 films be put on one reel,
– will I use more concentrated chemicals or process them for more time,
– will it affect the quality if I’m developing two rolls at once?I don’t really want to blow the negs, but time is time, and I can get frustrated after half an hour in the bathroom :)
Please share your experience if you have done it before!
jb7ParticipantNooooooo…
It wont even work-
I’ve got a large tank and reels you can borrow-
it takes 5x 120’s-Will want it back though…

randomwayMemberThanks JB. I will start doing them and I’m free all week, so I have time to finish the processing… I guess it’s not a problem if I take my time and store them in the fridge in the meantime. When I will get really fed up, I will PM you to borrow the tank… I will see.
I thought that you can’t put two rolls on a reel, it stops winding up after the film is through the part with the small balls. I got this advice from someone and thought that it’s worth having your opinion, too.
I will post some photos soon…
Thank you,
Zoltan
VitoldusMemberFrom what I know you can load two rolls of 120 film only on Jobo reels, and i’ve done that (with some success, as it’s rather tricky).
EddieParticipantI have trouble getting one 120 on , I imagine two would be difficult, I dont think its worth the risk. I would take up JB’s kind offer for a risk free solution.
thefizzParticipantFrom my experience it is easy to put two rolls of 120 on a reel. Just make sure the first one is the whole way into the reel before entering the second.
The problem I found on occassion was that the ends of each roll would overlap at some point during development by maybe up to one frame which resulted in two badly developed negs. It happened enough that I gave up and always now do one film per reel.

randomwayMemberThanks all. I guess I will just have to bring a radio, TV or something to the bathroom and stop moaning… I will do the few rolls that I have now, but if I shoot the other project that I have in head, I will take JB’s offer.
kanxzParticipantI think wind up two 120 films to one reel is possible, but just for this instance. Must use the adhesive tape to connect the end of the first roll and the head of the second roll, coz the reel using the small balls to moving the film.
If its done allready, the big problem comes, how many chemistry you use? I think its not just X2 this kind of simply, and the time for developing?
Not worth to just save this little chemistry, the film is the most important, if developing unsuccessful, all good memory gone… :cry:randomwayMemberIn the end I figured there was enough space in my bathroom to dry three rolls only, so I developed them one by one and did it for a few days… there is less chance to ruin all the photos and you can also change your dev times etc if something seems to be wrong.
Thanks anyway for the comments.
FintanParticipantIn theory its possible but very few people will put two rolls onto one spiral. I think its really designed to allow 220 film onto the spiral.
Theres not many 220 films left but they are really handy sometimes when you dont want to be changing rolls so often. Tri-x 220 is my weapon of choice when shooting people so there are less breaks.
GizzoParticipantI came across this discussion and I tried recently to put two rolls on 1 reel and it’s feasible.
I normally use the tape that’s at the end of the roll to stick together the two.
