As stated in another thread I’m looking at getting new fast (ish) lens for landscape and indoor portraits. There’s a review in this months Photography Monthly.

I’m not sure if you’re asking a question for suggestions or not??

But in case you are, the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX-DG is a smashing lens. It’s hardly ever off my camera. :)

Yeah I’m still researching suitable xx-70mm f2.8 lens, it’ll be another month before I commit but I’ll take note of your comment on the Sigma 24-70mm EX DG f2.8. There’s a similar Sigma but it’s a 28-70mm EX DG f2.8, do you think loosing 4mm would make a differance for landscape (Iguess it would), the 28-70mm is ?100stg cheaper. Also, does the digi 1.5x factor come into play with these lenses or are they designed for dSLR’s and so it’s not a factor.

I seen you mentioned your love affair with the 24-70mm on another thread.

    Brian,

I’m not sure if a 24mm wide angle would be enough for landscapes. Especially if you are you are not using a full-frame sensor.

Maybe something like a 17-40 or 17-85 would be more suitable. What is your budget? Canon or Nikon?

I’m using the Sony A100 so it’s a Minolta mount. Budget, in around ?250-350 (ish)

another vote for the Sigma 24-70. It’s a bit noisy but it’s a gem of a lens :)

Yeah, would second Ciaran on that lens, its a real beauty and relatively compared to the L version from canon its a very affordable lens. I seen that review and Sigma tested very impressively, wonder are they gonna spring any suprises in Germany apart from their new DSLR(Bayer Sensor).

You mean you haven’t yet heard about the new APO 50-150 mm F2.8 EX DC HSM? They’ve announced a range of other lenses to, but this is the most impressive one. The one caveat is that it’s designed spedifically for digital cameras with APS-C sized sensors, which, I suppose, represents most digital SLR’s anyway, except for 2 at the top of Canon’s line-up.

When I bought the Fuji S2 some years back I also bought that lens and have to say it was excellent……..It was by far
the best part of the kit !

I don’t shoot a lot of landscapes, bur when I do, I kind of hate the fact that I have a 24mm as a starting point (coupled with the fact I’m using an APX sensor). I actually miss the 18mm end of my old D70 kit lens and have even thought about purchasing a 14mm :!: I think the 4mm at the wide end between 24 and 28 would make a massive difference for landscape.

You’ll need at least an 18mm for landscape, you’ll find anything else disappointing.
