2nd Hand Lenses..
I see this on the for sale thread, Buy&Sell rag and many other places all the time, people are selling lenses they have grown out of and are demanding 90%+ of their original sale price back. Why is this? If youre buying a 2nd hand lens, it should be priced accordingly.
Why would someone think that you can sell a lens 2nd hand, obviously having used up some of its warranty at 90% of its original price, and more importantly, why buy this?
The way I was thought, 2nd hand meant 50-60% of the value..examples… B&S Sigma 50-500mm ?890
For Sale thread, Canon 17-40L ?650Al
jb7ParticipantI dunno-
It depends on the lens-
Like everything else, the market drives the price-
if someone pays the asking,
then that’s what its worth.I’ve been looking at some older lenses recently,
discontinued ones,
that’ll never be made again,
and the prices just keep on rising-Have a look at the Zuiko 24mm Shift on ebay, for example-
I recently bought a Nikkor M 300mm f/9,
because I couldn’t bear to see the price ratchet up-
Last year you could maybe get one for ?350,
I paid ?418 for a European example,
yesterday, an American one went for ?490-This lens has been discontinued for ten years-
Following some rave reviews on the internet,
demand has risen,
and the supply is limited.Modern lenses incorporating electronics that are regularly updated will lose their value quicker,
I suppose-Maybe the asking prices are too high,
in that case, they’ll remain unsold.Lenses can be things you get attached to;
I’ve bought more than I’ve ever sold-Maybe most people would prefer to keep their glass,
than sell it at any price-j
alzaphodParticipantI completely understand the price of Valuable or collectors lenses going up in price, heaven forbid we should ever reach a stage where we dont value certain items, but I do wish people woulde just refuse to pay these high prices for 2nd hand newer lenses..
its the idealist in me i guess!
Cant see myself selling any lenses either.. too attached already.
Aljb7ParticipantThey’re not collector lenses,
they’re user lenses-All lenses are to be used,
unless they’ve disintegrated,
or have grown mouldy,
or they’ve irradiated themselves to death-I’d never buy a lens I couldn’t take a picture with,
never buy a lens to put it in a glass case,
or as an investment-j
alzaphodParticipantmarkcapilitanParticipantCanon L lenses hold their value for good reason (if they’re in good nick). I previously bought a 300 2.8L for a couple hundred less than a new one. I sold it on 4 years later for the same amount I paid, very quickly too. A non-L or Sigma or something should be around 50-60% maybe, as you said.
ExpresbroParticipantI don’t suppose Camera lenses are any different than anything else, in that the seller will always want to get the best price possible (wouldn’t you if you were the seller?), but that will be balanced by what buyers are prepared to pay. If someone is selling something for way more than it’s actually worth then the only people who will buy it are A. Lazy people who can’t be bothered checking around or B. Someone desperate to have it at whatever cost.
Just look on ebay and see the amount of old SLR’s and lenses that are selling for a mere fraction of the price they would have been originally.
Swings and Roundabouts. The buyer in the end will dictate the price.
