2nd Lens for Canon 400d
-
joe_elwayParticipant
The aforementioned Tamron has a great reputation. There’s a guy on Phototakers who is an amazing shooter and swears by it.
Someone mentioned a canon EF 17-40L. For a little bit more than your budget you can get it from Germany. It might be worth holding off that little bit logner to get it. Stunner of a lens. It’s my next lens purchase as long as the lotto fairys don’t come calling and drop me an EF 600mm. I’m trying to steer clear of the EF-S range. My theory is that a lens is for life and EF-S lenese don’t work on the top end Canon bodies so I’m only buying EF mounts.
Still, I don’t know if I’ve outgrown the kit lens yet. Mounts may end up being the deciding factor if this contract I’m on pays for a 1Dmk II N ……
PeteMcDMemberThe other view is that a lens will hold its value relatively well. An EF-S lens may be best for your needs on the 400D because it has a useful focal range. That same focal range may not be so useful on a full fram 5D, or 1.3x 1D. So why not get the glass that is most useful to you now, on the body that you own, and sell it on for not a lot less cash when you need the EF mount. Obviuosly, if a full frame upgrade is looking ominous in the next several months, that’s pointless, so disregard this digression…
Canon seem to be investing a lot in the EF-S mount, and there’s a good chance that it will stick around for a while. And the extra length is very useful at the telephoto end. On the flip side, sensor pricing will come down in the near future, so full frame sensors on budget/mid range DSLR’s will become a viable option. Who knows where it will go?
I would add to the suggestions that constant aperture throughout the zoom range is a very worthwhile consideration. It will reduce your thumb fiddling and faffing, which allows you to focus on composition and creativity instead of checking your aperture isn’t changing as you zoom in and out.
AimeeParticipantI never thouhgt about asking this before.. will any lens that fits the 400d fit my Canon EOS Elan 7n too? I have a sigma lens that fits both.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantIts the other way round……..any EF lens that fits your Elan will fit the 400D. But EFS lenses (ie designed for DSLR’s with crop sensor) will not fit a 35mm film or full frame SLR.
AimeeParticipantI bit the bullett and went for:
Tamron AF 28-75/2.8 XR DI LD f. Canon????????????
Canon EF 50/1.8 II?????Eeeeeeeek.
Don’t know what half the letters stand for.positronMemberOoh, new toys!!
On the same track here to be honest – I have a 400D, 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 70-300 and don’t know why, I just cant trust the kit lens as a midrange walkabout lens. I might get a Tamron AF 28-75/2.8…blah myself, but I would also love to get something really wide, like the 10-20 Podge posted. (Having said that, I don’t have much success with the 70-300 APO either, its probably me not the kit lens :) ).
Please lets know what you think of that Tamron!
PodgeMemberI would also love to get something really wide, like the 10-20 Podge posted.
Its permanently on my camera. I was just saying to Madra Rua yesterday that I’m more protective of the 10-20 than the camera.
I highly recommend it and its a lot of fun but it can be hard work at times.AimeeParticipantYeah, that sigma sounds amazing and frm what i;ve read. anyone that has it `LURVES IT.. but i got greedy and wanted to get two lenses so budget wouldn’t allow for the sigma. I;m sure i;ll regret it.. damn i;m already starting to…
hate being so indecisive..AimeeParticipantjoe_elwayParticipantAimee wrote:

Don’t know what half the letters stand for.:) Join the club! “XR DI LD f”! I hope it makes coffee in the morning and brings it to you as you wake up. Oooh and Toast just the way you like it too. Mmmmm Toast and coffee ….
Let us know how you get on with them. I love my 50mm and I’ve only ever heard people raving about the Tamron you bought.
AimeeParticipantwell, i;m just waiting to try it out now.. probably wont get to it ’till saturday at the earliest :(
Bring on the long evenings..AimeeParticipanthey all. just wanted to say thanks for all the advice and input. I’m delighted with both lenses! Have had a little go of each and i’m thrilled. will post soon. a
