This is my second attempt at using a studio for portraits. How do you think I did? I would love to hear all feedback.

Image 5 looks a little bit like a hovering torso?! I’m no photography expert but I can offer advice from reading plenty of magazines!!!

No 4 is my favourite, any chance you cropped a bit off and you have one with her toes in it?

No 1 the lighting on model looks good, background is off though. How is the background lit? Between her head and arm is much darker.

No 2 conversion is nice but there is something funny about the lighting on the models nose, kinda makes her nose look crooked which, its the same on 3 and 5. I am thinking the light is too far to her right and needs to be more to the front.

I’m only starting to play with lighting myself so I could be completely wrong, I am curious what front lighting there was on no 4?

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Button – In image 4 I think I did crop it a little too much. I do have one with her toes in it but her pose is not as strong in it hence me using the one uploaded here.

Image 1 – I am only starting to use studio lighting which is s a lot harder than I first imagined especially for the background. It was what I thought a foolproof set up. Softbox to the front and two flash heads with lamps on either side to illuminate the background to try avoid shadows. But this failed and no matter where I seemed to point them I still got shadow areas

The lighting for Image for was just a soft box with the flash set to almost minium power or just enough to get some detail in her face. Took a few attempts to get it right and a little dodge in PS help lighten up the face a bit more.

For the second time in a studio i think you’ve done well. The model looks good, i am sure she will be happy with the shots, the other commenters have pointed out the toes missing… etc.. so.. i will say for the background.. if you want a high key background & shadowless.. you need to have the background lit at 1.5 stops to 2 stops above your key light. However this will give a lot of light bouncing back on your model, so stand her well away from the background , at least 8 ft from the background.. more if you can get it.

    Thanks Niall

That really will help. I tried lots of different things to try and get rid of the shadows but nothing seemed to work as well as I wanted it to. So for my third time lucky attempt I will take on what you said about the background!
