3 Views of Mount Fuji

Perhaps these should be in the landscape section, but I think they fit in the criteria for travel.
Also as I’m not in the landscape clique but in the travel one I feel more comfortable here (and the standard is very high over there).
The mountain itself is very shy and is usually hidden in haze, if visible at all. In the first photo the top is peeking through the haze and catching more light.
Didn’t bring any long lenses with me, and I was further away from the mountain than I expected, hence the small size of Mount Fuji.Martin

jb7ParticipantYes, would have to admit the cost of entry into the landscape clique would be way too high for me-
Don’t worry, most of them never make it out of there,
so it’s fairly safe to say anything…I think you’re right to put these in travel anyway-
I really like the first, it does stand out from these three,
and the scale of the mountain within the frame is good-I like the second too,
though at the size it’s reproduced here,
it seems like those boats should be closer-That velvia thing kills the last for me,
by comparison to the first two it’s garish and artificial-
Perhaps it might be acceptable as one frame in a series of colour matched projected slides,
but by comparison to the first two, the palette is too extreme-
for me, at any rate- not being a landscaper…I suppose it’s possible to alter the saturation and colour balance once the image is digitized,
but I’ve seldom used Velvia, so I wouldn’t really know…randomwayMemberI love that Fuji film and use it all the time when shooting colour. Although slightly tilted, I would choose the second one from here… it will look good when printed large I think. Vibrant colours, interesting artificial swans floating on the lake and the mountain is not photographed for the sake of photographing it… it’s not the main point of interest. I love the look of the water and the waves.

Interesting you should say the boats in the second one should be bigger.
I do have a photo with duck boats nearer/bigger and I think it would have been a better shot, more effective, but I messed up their positioning.
Originally I thought of them as a nuisance and wasn’t ready to take the shot. The second batch crossing were further away.I got the Velvia back from the shop first, and I did like it was doing but then when I got the negative film back my opinion of it went down (for this subject).
As I’m new to film it was an interesting exercise to shoot the same scenes with different types.Randomway I have big difficult with getting a camera straight, even on a tripod. Your eye is very good.
Thanks for the comments,
Martin
Liam2673ParticipantHi Martin
I definitely prefer no.1 of the 3, there is a nice symmetry btn the cloud and the mountain, and the colour of the sky and the mountain combine very well; also like the long grass in the foreground.
Not mad keen in the foreground in no.3.
Must look for this film (Fuijipro 160), its a nice result.
Alan RossiterParticipantNot that it’s a competition but #1 is a standout shot that would compete well with the landscape section for room. It’s a pure, uncomplicated shot with the surroundings only complimenting the mountain. As with most multi-image posts there is always a “better” image and “lesser better” image which is unfortunate in most cases as all three have their merits. I know it’s probably sacrilegious to suggest so but I believe there’s a better crop in #2…the square knocks the proportion out for me.
But it’s film…so what would I know anyway!

kenhParticipant1 and 3 are beauties Martin, although I am a bit undecided about the foreground grass in 1. :D
MartinOCParticipantThanks for the comments.
I think I will burn down the grass a bit in the first, it is a bit distracting to me , I did burn in some golf fairways but forgot the grass.
But I do see where you’re coming from Liam, initially I was wondering whether I liked the grass or didn’t. The blade in the middle I might leave but those in the bottom right I will darken.Interesting idea about an alternate crop for number two, I’ll give it a go. But not sure the shot is worth trying to improve.

I don’t believe in special treatment/affirmative action in the case if film, although it is a disadvantaged minority :D .You don’t have to go easy on (originally) analogue photos.
(well except for Toy Camera stuff)Cheers,
Martin
