35mm fully manual film for a photography student
-
carpedeumParticipant
Hi,
My daughter, who is at the end of year 1 of a photography degree, needs to get a 35mm manual film camera. Some fellow students have a Phenix DC303N. Brand is unknown to me. My instinct is to look at a quality brand as I suspect film cameras are falling in price and a good purchase now would be a good investment in her four year course. Any recommendations? Any specialist shops in Dublin for secondhand kit besides Bermunghams and the Camera Exchange?
Thanks in advance.
guthrijParticipantIt looks like good value but you should see if you can pick up an Olympus OM1 with a standard 50 mm lens. These are “cheap as chips” on eBay.
Cheers, John
jb7ParticipantI’d second the OM1, but with a 28 or 35mm lens-
it’s perhaps easier to get good pictures straight away with a wide angle lens,
and it forces you to get close to some things,
while allowing you to fit other things in,
that you might otherwise miss with a standard 50mm.It’s small and light too-
search for OM1 or OM1n
5faytheParticipantI’ve used a Pentax K1000 for years.
If it’s manual your after they don’t come more manual than this.
You set everything.Only electronic aid is a centre the needle type meter which is visible in the
viewfinder. I’ve never had to change the battery. They are still fetching £80 – £90 in the UK.
I’ve always loved it.

FintanParticipantGunns in Wexford Street (opposite Whelans Pub) stock the Phenix and you could go in there and have a look at it and talk to Louise and John who have been providing cameras to eager students for countless years.
I’ve no idea why the Phenix is continually recommended but if you look at the specs of it, it really looks quite a decent camera. An OM1 would be lovely but I’m wondering why the Phenix is so popular. Do you know what the tutors recommend?
g0riIIaParticipantI’d deffo agree with the sentiments about the OM1 have one in the back room – don’t use it enough these days though fantastic little camera, also any 80s Nikons. Ricoh is also pretty good and they take pentax lenses… Keeps your ayes on the web they’re always popping up on adverts.ie; gumtree.ie and of course photographyireland.net R
jqmx0ParticipantI’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for but I have a Canon EF-M with a 35-80mm (Slight damage to outer ring) and a Sigma 70-210mm lens I’d be willing to sell if it’s of interest to you.
