I’m not sure the inclusion of the sky is necessary to making this a good image as adding it does give you something else to view other than your subject. It’s yet another example of the things we take for granted that in isolation have an interest…and can generate a history lesson!

I know what you mean Alan – I took a shot without the sky, and pondered long and hard on both – the sky just shades it for me, because of the contrast it offers against
the stone of the wall – I was going for the aesthetics rather than the history! :?
The cloud has a pinkish look to it, but then it may be sunrise/set, of course.
Is it a bit soft, or perhaps I am just tired.
There must be many more of these out there.
Perhaps a straight on shot would be better.
