40D or 50D
-
MikkaParticipant
I have been offered a new camera body to celebrate my “half century” next month.
I currently have a 400D (which will be kept as a backup) so it’s a toss up between the 40D and 50D. Is the higher pixel count / vga display / hdmi output really worth the extra €300+ depending on where you buy.
The reviews don’t really rate the higher iso and most of the other features seem to be more or less similar.
As my better half is stumping up the cash for this I would like to think value for money (hard earned on her behalf I might add) outdid the nice to have features if the end result was more or less the same.Your thoughts / recommendations greatly appreciated……………Mikka
PadraigParticipantIf you want value for money then the 40d is the way to go. I upgraded to one from a 350d last year. Its a great camera. The nice to have features of the 50d won’t do a lot to improve your photography,in my opinion. They wouldn’t encourage me to upgrade to one. What ever you decide you won’t be disappointed.
brownieParticipantDefinately think the 40D is the one to get…its great value
and the 50D is not worth all the extra cash…its just too
much more money for not enough extra features.Noel Browne.
RaVMemberBoth would be a great step up from your 400D (you ll see when you pick it up for the first time ;) )
I would go for the 40D without a doubt, your unlikely to see any day to day benefits, your(her) wallet will be happier and its just a really good bargain ;)
guthrijParticipantOne thing to remember is that all DSLRs drop in re-sale value faster than an Irish Bank so while the 50D will cost you more it will have a better trade up value if you decide to upgrade.
Cheers.

MikkaParticipantThanks all for the advice. I have plumped for the 40D, ordered it today from Calumet in Belfast, last one in the shop :D . I couldn’t believe the price (£Stg589) and even the shipping charge (DHL) was dead cheap.
I did actually try to get one down here (a naive attempt at supporting the local economy) but the few shops I tried did not have any in stock and if any new ones were ordered they would be at a higher price due to the YEN exchange rate.
I agree that the 50D would have had a better trade up value but I reckon I am going to wear this one out
