40D or wait for the 450xsi

BrickeeParticipant
Now I,m wondering. I’m thinking of upgradeing my xti. I’m also wondering if my batery grip will fit the 450xsi.
rerunMemberAs far as I understand it, the battery grip for the 350D/400D will not fit the 450D/xsi because the battery size has changed.
lousyParticipantHi Jim, I had the Canon 400D and recently upgraded to the Canon 40D and I have to say it is a far superior camera.
It has a better grip and feel in your hand and of course techie wise far better.
Your choice

PatEnough of the pet names now
Besides that I agree that the 40D has a better spec/is more tech. If this is something you’re aspiring to, or think you might be within a year or two, then consider the 40D.
Your other choicu
StasrerunMemberI know this is dragging up an old discussion, but I’ve been reading the specs for the 40D and 450D on dpreview and I can’t seem to make a choice between the two as to which is the better camera for me. I was waiting for the 450D but with the rebate the 40D is close enough in price. The main advantages of the 40D over the 450D, as far as I can see, are that the 40D has higher ISO, faster shutter and pentaprism viewfinder. Nice to haves. However, the 450D has the same size sensor (is it compromised by the MP increase?), SD cards are less easily damaged, infrared remote. Have Canon moved the 450D too close in spec to the 40D and what is the killer reason for going for a 40D over a 450D?
TadhgNMemberI upgraded last year from a 350D to the 40D.
I believe that the new 450D is more substantially built that the 400/350D models but at the time the larger build and in particular the larger grip on the 40D were a revelation to me. I felt the 40D to be much more solid in my hands and the controls less fiddly.
The frames per second rate of the 40D was a huge bonus for me as I quite like trying to take pictures of birds in flight. The 40D fps rate is almost twice as fast as the 450D. If you have any interest in photographing sports or wildlife, and can’t afford the EOS 1D MkII or MkIII, the 40D is the way to go.RGH_PhotographyMemberI just steped up from the 400D to the 40D and i will never look back !! I sold the battery grip, 4 battries and the kit lens etc and had to replace a lot of gear but it was well worth it :)
So quick and easy to change the settings, its faster, bigger screen, better ISO settings and custom settings etc …. go get it now mate.MartinOCParticipantWhen my 350D died, I upgraded to 400D be I am a bit sorry I didn’t go for a 5D.
I know they are expensive, but if you are primarily a landscape photographer, the full frame sensor seems to make a very big difference.I’m sticking with my 400D and waiting to see if a new 5D or similar come out this year, as is expected (although no one know) or next.
For sports or wildlife the extra reach, and high fps rate the smaller sensor has advantages but for static shots, ie portraits and landscape, the bigger media are usually recommended.I’m not trying to confuse you more :?

PadraigParticipantUpgraded from 350D to 40D a few months ago. Well worth the upgrade. Buy on-line you’ll save a fortune.
ThorstenMemberMight be worth holding off for the EOS 50D, rumoured to replace the 40D soon. Who knows what Photokina will bring in terms of new releases from Canon.
nfl-fanParticipantI rarely use the 40D anymore… I use the 400D for the vast majority of stuff now… I just like that it’s small and handy and takes shots which are of a high quality and inseperable from the 40.
My 40D is now pretty much backing up the 400D. I even get the 350D out once in a while for sentimental purposes.
I think that specific requirements aside (FPS, Live View)… there not much to seperate these cameras… especially from an image quality perspective.
Personally I’d keep the money… and invest in a couple of good lenses.

Looks like the 50D is on the way, now only for the 5d markII

JMac-2006ParticipantI finally took plunge and opted for 450d – the live view and couple other points won out over the 400d – 40d just was a stretch too far – had been used to liveview on my trusty finepix – hoping now the Mp and quality will bring forward quality and possibilities for my images – can’t wait to get out and about with it

Jthat’s great advice – remember the glass makes huge difference – i had the luck to try out some of the most expensive lenses you can buy in the past borrowed from friends and it is amazing the quality – it doesnt matter what dSLR you have if the lens is poor
