Hi,
I recently purchased the 430 EXii. I am new to off camera flashes so was wondering if there is a good site or someone to offer some help on using it. I know about the angles of the flash head, bouncing it to soften the light etc but i am more confused by the mode i should use it in? I usually shoot in manual. Before I use my flash, do I need to make sure that I set my aperture and shutter speed correctly to the right exposure, then just fire the flash or will this over expose my shot?
Any advice would be welcome,
Thanks
EMC
I own one of these flashes – and initially found added a flash challenging, after feeling very comfortable with my understanding of the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO. You really need a good understanding of these relationships before adding the flash in my opinion.
My first recommendation is to read the very comprehensive manual so you can instantly change its settings. (manual, distance,ETTL, flash fill, second curtain, power output etc.)
YouTube is a great resource to find out out to mix ambient light and flash.
But if you want a really quick relatively foolproof setting – go manual mode in camera 1/125 and f/8, ISO 100 – and set the flash to manual. Then all you need to be concerned about to get a good exposure is the flash power output. Start at 1/16 and go up or down as required.
A good idea is to get a pal to sit on a chair reading a newspaper – and try out lots of settings.
