    Hi,

I am sorry to hear about the financial position that you are finding yourself in, I know quite a few people who are in the same boat, and I know that it isn’t easy for them.

I am not a professional photographer and therefore do not make a living from photography, so I suppose that I am not exactly best placed to answer your difficult question, but I will give my opinion for what it is worth….

Given your financial position, I am not sure that it would be a great idea to take on a lease for a studio. There is no guarantee that this will bring additional business your way, and it could end up being another financial headache to deal with. Instead I would be looking to see if there are any studios that you could hire for the day, should a customer become available. You might even be able to do a deal with the Studio to see if you can get some decent deals if you continually use them…. This way you don’t have to commit to a lease, and also would have access to professional studio facilities.

You haven’t mentioned anything about any promotions or marketing that you have been doing to try to drum up some additional business. Do you have a website (none was added to your note above), maybe looked into ads in the local papers (might be expensive), looked into social networking sites such as Facebook or twitter, maybe approached your past customers with new deals or some sort of incentive if they recommend a friend ?

I hope that some of this helps….. I wish you all the best….

    Hi Emma.
Sorry to hear of your financial difficulties, but I can’t offer any professional advice either. I do agree with Lawrence however, that taking out a lease would be another expense that you don’t need & that there wouldn’t be any guarantee of more business from it.
Unfortunately there are lots of people struggling at the moment & getting photography done for occassions etc seem to be a luxury which they cannot afford either.
I hope you get some good advice from the members here & wish you luck for the future.

Ok heres some ideas and comments for you, there might be a couple of reasons that your business as come to a stop and a couple of ideas to get it going again…. Firstly there are far to many people not honest enough with their skill levels… and far to many lazy people who think just sit the kid there on a white BG and shoot .

Have an honest look at your skill level- is your work good enough- have you just run the limit of well wishers and friends that got some work done because they know you – and your work is not really good enough to carry you the rest of the way ?????. I f its not that well you are just another victim of the times we are in – only the best will live through it –

So you will have to offer something different than those in your town/city.

I would not rent a place for business unless you could work a deal with the owner six mths for half rent or something like that.. Dont forget they are suffering too…

Or you could go the we come to you lark – one over the other when you visit people in their houses you have to cost of adverts thats alot of money – when you rent a shop unit you then have a shop window for showing your work .. can you out balance the other?? does it make more sense money wise to rent a shop?? dont forget your rates–

the images –be differnt yet simple- create setups wash tubs where the baby sits in all that sort of stuff.. then keep them on file and shoot the babies/kid on a plain BG and put them in the set up BG these can be big sellers.. create email lists send out offers- collect emails by running free portrait sessions. bonny baby with the local baby shop. set up can give awy free 6×4 portraits in busy place Tescos lobby make the money when they want a bigger shot it also gets u known- there are endless ways to go about things- but you have to face the 2 great truths right now 1 im just not good enough YET or it s just not working in this present time and nothing to do with your levels of skill sadly this one is harder to fix than the first..

    hi damiend,

I am skilled photographer, I just donot get enough enquiries at moment. all the clients were happy with my work, and as I said that I offer reasonable price and different styles. It is very simple reason is I cant do anything without money. I cant afford to buy a car for myself, I cant afford advertising for my business.anything you do you need money. simple is that.
thank you for the advice anyway.
