5D Mk2 is here

Canon have announced the 5D mk2. And looking at the specs, they still haven’t given into photographers who were wanting a digital version of the film body Eos3. I’ll be sticking with my two 5D’s for another few years.
(If you were thinking of getting a 5D, yes it makes sense to get the mk2).JMcLParticipantLooking at the specs, and the ability to capture about 30 minutes of HD video on a 4Gb card in particular, I wonder what effect this might have on EU duty levels. At the moment, digital still cameras are classed as IT equipment, and are duty exempt. Video camera aren’t. I remember reading a while back that those that like to get their hands on our cash were looking at this, what with the capability of compacts to capture video. Now it seems that high quality video recording is going to be a feature on SLRs, the line isn’t exactly blurred any longer.
Nice specs though, and a pretty sharp price point, especially WRT the Nikon, especially if high ISO performance holds up!

Would the Lenses I have for my 40D be compatible with the 5D?
Depends: if they are Canon EF-S they won’t fit. Canon EF will. Other makers
lenses should fit, but may be designed for crop sensors, so aren’t much use.FirestarterParticipantJMcL wrote:

Thats interesting, does that mean if you import a camera from outside the EU you dont have to pay import duty on arrival  and would still camera lenses be classed the same ?
pihjinMemberThis video was taken by vincent LaForet in the Canon 5D Mk II
It’s all very low light and quite hard-to-shoot stuff anyway (I studied film production for a few years).
this video alone makes me want to sell my organs for this camera…
AND it can take stills while you’re filming.http://www.vincentlaforet.com/

Yes, correct. But you still have to pay VAT. Many people fail to make the distinction between Import Duty and Value Added Tax. They are two quite distinct taxes. Import duty on consumer goods like these is typically 6% and VAT on goods is typically 21%. VAT is applied after the import duty is applied, so you also end up paying a tax on a tax!
You can look up the tariff codes (and hence the import duties that apply) for any product on the European tax website (don’t ask me what the URL is, I have it filed away somewhere, but you can find it if you dig deep enough into http://www.revenue.ie).
FirestarterParticipantJust better off buying them here from a camera shop really, not much of a saving buying from the states for example and then you don’t get the warranty. gotta me hands on a 5 mk11 though so better start saving :D love a full frame digital.

As Thorten said. Lenses don’t count, and the duty will be between 3.5 and 6.75%, plus of course VAT at 21% (21.5% – has it changed yet?) is applicable on top of everything. Search on the REvenue website for “duty” and you should find the link to the site where you can look all this stuff up, though having done it once, I decided that life’s way too short and there were more interesting things to do such as driving slivers of bamboo up your nails (well, slight exaggeration maybe, but you get the idea!).

richiehatchMemberI picked up the 5D2 on Tuesday. So far I am really impressed. Having come from the 5D I knew what the handling would be like etc and yeah its equally as good. Better built definitely. Feels very tightly put together. The screen is fantastic… so bright and soooo sharp…! It feels quicker in use too. The biggest difference to me is the image quality at hi ISO’s. There is very small amounts of noise right up to 3200 ISO. At 6400 its there but not crazy amounts and still very very very useable. Whilst the type of photography I do most of the time doesn’t need these clean hi ISO’s I thought some of yee may be interested in the samples below. The first is the main pic which I took handheld with the 35mm f1.4L. The other 3 are 100% crops at 1600, 3200 and 6400. No post processing on the crops at all. The camera also has 12800 and 25600 which are noisy but useable also. Overall I am very pleased and am looking forward to putting it through its paces on a house shoot on Sunday..! See samples below:
1600 ISO
3200 ISO
6400 ISOIf ye have any questions about the 5D2 I’ll do my best to answer…!

VidcoMemberCongrats Richie,
Collected mine on Monday.Don’t want to scare you but……
Have you seen this thread about sensor issues http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=30222755Mine is displaying the same artifacts even at ISO 100 but you really need to pixel peep.
I haven’t tried a RAW file yet as I can’t use DPP very well.I think the image you posted would be perfect to see if they are present on your one.
Poulet et Lait…MemberYeah I think in relation to the 5D MII I’m going to wait a while and see how it tests with people….get their opinions first. Think next camera might not even be Canon (and no….not Nikon either!)
guthrijParticipantBlack spots! That is a bit scary. Canon screwed up big time with the 1D MkIII surely they haven’t dropped another bollock with the 5D MkII.
