Pinched from the UK car industry of years ago…result = no UK car industry.
guthrijParticipantIt’s OK folks Brockwell has spoken:
Canon 5D Mark II black dots
Tweakers always find something irrelevant about which to complain whenever a new camera comes out.
For the 5D Mk II, it’s the fact that the camera’s sharpening algorithms sometimes are ringing a little too much on the right side of brilliant specular highlights. This leads to a rare darker pixel on the edge, so what.
When viewed properly, this increases the apparent sharpness, and apparent brilliance of the harsh light sources.
Ignore this. If this stuff bugs you, either get over it, or shoot film like a pro.
guthrijParticipantNice image on the Canon EOS forum taken with the 5D MkII

It looks pretty good to me.
Cheers, John

Nothing new there, at least not to anyone working in the IT industry. Hardware and software manufacturers rarely release product that is 100% bug free. Digital cameras are essentially computers run by software. It’s almost impossible to test for all the possible permutations of usage that people will subject their equipment to and the only way to really find out is when the products are in real-life every-day use.
I would have been very surprised if the 5D MkII had no bugs. I apply the same logic to camera upgrades as I do to computer and/or software upgrades – I simply avoid being an early adopter! I plan on waiting until Spring ’09 before making my purchase. Hopefully the price will have settled down by then as well.

It’s easy to say that Thorsten when you’re mature and sensible… but when you’re a kit whore like me the temptation is far too great.
I ordered mine this morning £1899.

Who from at that price?
nfl-fanParticipantNot from here, but even cheaper (as posted by guthrij):

rc53MemberclimberhuntParticipantI picked up my 5D2 from Wheelans in Limerick on Thursday evening (11th Dec 2008), and last night took a few long exposure night shots.
400% crop of a night image.
No evidence of black spots. Maybe it’s only at high ISOs? Maybe I’m lucky?
Quick Review:
Live-view with 5x/10x zoom is a very handy feature.
Taking a still while taking video results in a 1/2 second black gap in the video, so recommend either stills or video but not both at the same time.
Viewfinder is huge compared to 400D, much easier to manually focus.
Overall impression of the camera? FANTASTIC. It’s some jump from the 400D.I’ll find plenty of subjects to make use of this camera without worrying too much about the black dot issue. :)
Rgds,
Dave.Poulet et Lait…MemberWell the 5DMII hasn’t won me over yet. The only advantage I see of having that instead of my current body is just the megapixels. Firstly I’m not a videographer, I’m a photographer shooting stills and how many people here are going to be out shooting late at night with such high ISO’s, unless you’re getting shots printed at large sizes does “noise” really matter?
MartinOCParticipantThis info was posted on dpreview today from Canon regarding the 5DmkII issues..

BMParticipantNot sure if this changes my views on the (lack of) value of video in a DSLR.
While the footage is good, the birds don’t move a lot, so why video them?
climberhuntParticipantTo be honest, I’m the same on the video feature. I’ve only taken a few quick test clips to see how it works, and my PC calves on trying to play the files (AMD3800X2 with X1900XTX gfx card and 2G of RAM).
Went to see Santa in Alliwee Caves, and I went to a school play. Did I take Video? No. Did I take lots of stills? Yes.
I think if you’re into video, you’ll buy a HD camcorder at a fifth of the price of a 5D2. If you want to take photographs, you’ll buy an SLR (had written 5D2, but SLR covers all the VERY capable brand names out there Nikon, Canon, etc.).
Oh, and am I happy with the 5D2? YES! Breathtaking sharpness compared to my trusty old 400D.
Cheers,
Dave.
