70-200 not focusing

Was down at Kirki yesterday, went out to take a few snaps of the karting, and my 70-200 (Nikon f2.8 VR) refused to focus, either auto or manual.

Removed the lens, cleaned the connections, tried again, same result.

Put my 50mm 1.8 on and it focused fine in both auto and manual.

Lens is <12 mths old so it'll be under warranty still, but anyone seen/heard of this before?

A friend had a similar issue with a canon zoom and repair guy told him it was due to dust in the workings of the lens, each time you zoom or focus the lens sucks in or expels small amounts of air and my friend shoots a lot at the beach and was told small sand particles had gotten in.

I bought a Sigma 12-24mm last year and when I took it out of the box it refused to focus. After a bit of coaxing the manual focus worked but auto focus was more stubborn. Sent it back and got a replacement which is purring happily to this day.

It’s off back to Nikon…. still under warranty, so hoping it’s covered.
