70-200mm f/2.8 which lens
-
joedoyleParticipant
I have a Nikon D80 and looking to get a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. However, there is a massive price difference between the Nikon version and Sigma version. On the Berminghams site, the Nikon is €1990 while the Sigma is €900.
I’ve read that the Nikon is faster, but does it justify the difference in price? Would appreciate all views and especially from anyone who has used both.
CianMcLiamParticipantI think the Sigma gets ok reviews but for Nikon I’d go with the Nikon 80-200 AF-D or AF-S which are just a nad behind the 70-200 AF-S in image quality but less than half the price. Berminghams in Dublin have a very good condition AF-D at the moment.
Fish out some reviews of bokeh from the sigma, with the Nikons you can’t go wrong but sigma might be a different story.
Dominic 7ParticipantHi Joe,
“Walshphotos” has a Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED in As New Condition in the For Sale section.

DominicBallymanParticipantThe horse below was taken with the Sigma 70-200mm version. It’s obviously a fast moving object, sharp as a tack and great bokeh. The GAA one was taken with the 70-200mm and a 1.4x converter. Again, sharp and good bokeh even though it was f4 for this one. And finally, the last one was taken under floodlights using the 70-200mm 1600 ISO. A little noisy obviously but again sharp. There is excellent seperation of the subject from the background in all three.
I couldn’t recommend the Sigma version enough and because of the quality of this lens alone I’ve ended up getting rid of all my canon lenses and replacing them with the Sigma equivalents!! I’m a believer!!!

joedoyleParticipantFolks – thanks for the responses.
Dominic – I could not find that lens for sale under Walshphotos. Do you have a link pls?
Thanks
