A beginner in the Botanic Gardens
-
AppleTreesParticipant
Hi all, I’m new, here and in photography! but don’t hold back!! let me know what you think, these were taken in the Botantic Gardens in Dublin, Thanks!
SarahAlan RossiterParticipantHi Sarah and welcome to PI.
Sizewise your images are a little on the large size – try bringing them down to 800 pixels on the longest side. This allows for most people to view on a regular monitor. And it would be worthwhile signing up for something like http://www.photobucket.com to host your images and then embed them here. You’ll find more people responding and offering assistance when they don’t have to go off the current page.
Quality wise I find them quite well presented. They are sharp, well exposed and saturation is as you would expect. What I do find is that the points of focus, ie, the squirrel, flowers and robin are dead centre of the frame. What I’d suggest is have a look at composition techniques. Start with the “rule of thirds”. It’s not a rule as such but a guideline. Once you understand it you can break it! Not that there’s anything wrong with a centrally placed image but some targets do work better with different composition techniques.
Keep posting.
Alan.
AppleTreesParticipantHi Alan,
I’ve resized the images now, hopefully they appear better now.
I do agree with you about trying different compositions and not always having it dead centre.
Thanks for the great advice!
Sarah
BrickeeParticipantHi Sarah,
Alan already said it. welcome along.
This is a great place to learn post often and accept honest feedback.Jim
Big FellaParticipantHi Sarah, welcome to the site, good images, well done.
Stephen.
P.S. As Alan said.
DenverDollParticipantHi Sarah!
You’ve got some really nice shots there :)
Welcome and looking forward to seeing more of you on here..yay for girls!
Noely FParticipantGood stuff for first time posting  Good advice too about composition, the first flower shot is fine in the centre though.
Dont be afraid to lie on yer belly either, its good to try different eye levels. I love the squirrel sniffing the flowers, crop a bit off the right and it would be great. Welcome aboard too :lol:summerdreamnMemberas above with composition, etc and a big welcome :)
fantastic captures! i love the squirrel, it really shows character, there’s real comedy in that shot (if that makes sense)
AppleTreesParticipantThanks all, really appreciate the comments and advice!
oh that squirrel was a real comedian, not the tiniest bit of fear in him!!
Its a great place to go on a nice day, you feel like Dr Dolittle with all the squirrels and robins chasing you!!Just curious what way would you crop this one? Have noticed majority of the photos have himself in the centre! I’m not sure because of the dominence of the leaves on the trunk and the light to the right of the squirrel but am steering towards cropping the right hand side.
Alan RossiterParticipantIf I was to crop I’d take the left side in as far as the vertical thin branch running along down by the leaves (to the outside half way between the branch and the edge) and take the right side in as far as the vertical branch there too (just inside). That gives you a vertical frame and the squirrel is looking into space in the image. I’m not sure the crop will survive though as the squirrel looks a little OOF.
But others will differ…
Alan
RobMemberI’d agree with Alan here Sarah; the crop he suggested would be a
huge improvement from a compositional point of view. As he said,
it is a little out of focus, so it may not be a real keeper, but it will
certainly help you see what a difference a little more thought in
composition can do for an image.
Welcome to PI by the way, and keep posting, keep asking questions,
and don’t be shy about giving your own opinions on the work of
anyone else here. Every opinion is valued and valuable…Rob.
ExpresbroParticipantHi Sarah and Welcome.
Again..a nice set of images, especially for a first post and a beginner. You’ve obviously already grasped some of the fundamentals…you’ll be composing with the best of them in no time :D
You’re right about the Gardens btw..I visited there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was great..could have spent a lot longer.
It’s not often you get something that entertaining for free in this country.
Well done again
Robbie
8)DeeboParticipantHi Sarah , welcome to PI from me.
