A big ask???

Hey,
I am looking quite a bit of info here – so any help would be great, any links are anything.
Ok, I did post a little while ago about the best way to ‘up skill’, I would love to go back to college full-time to study photography, plan B, would be to complete a distance learning coarse. I have day job, so it would a risk to quit it.
On saying that, I attended a meeting in work this week where, you know ‘the meeting’. The company is not closing down yet but the ‘R’ word was mentioned more than once.So here’s the questions –
What are my options now, in terms of making an effort to seriously improve my photography skills?
Has any of you taking up photography after the redundancy? Can you tell a bit how you went about it?IsabellaParticipanthiya, i don’t know much about distance learning options, but as far as full time courses go there are some good fetac 1 – 2 year courses depending on your location… entry usually based on portfolio and interview, and often cover both fine art and commercial areas… art colleges also a good option, DIT, NCAD, University of Ulster all have degree courses. LSAD starting new photography course in sept, but all of these require much more from the portfolio and usually recommend you do a year of portfolio prep course. very large amount of mature students accepted these days, though funding not as easy as it was a few years ago, higher education grants massively reduced though they still cover the enormous fees and provide a wee bit of help. means tested tho so if day job pays too much you’re out of luck. back to education payments are fantastic but you have to be on the welfare for a year prior to application….
hope this is of some help
smbeeMemberInteresting…
I didn’t know LSAD were starting photography, I will def be looking into that. LSAD is 10 minutes from my house – also I know my way around… it where I got my degree (sculpture).IsabellaParticipantah right, I’m there myself doing print. only know about the photography degree because my tutor is gonna be running off to be course leader… if you’re limerick based i would very much recommend looking at the photography course in LCFE on mulgrave street, my sister did her diploma there and the course seemed really good, id be inclined to wait a year or so and get some feedback on the LSAD one…. you know how it is, the first year of something is always riddled with teething problems, and sometimes getting hold of studio/equipment up there is already a nightmare!
smbeeMemberHey,
Who is going to running it?
I had a look at the LSAD website and I can’t see anything about it.
Thankfully back in my day there wasn’t a big problem with getting studio time – but then sculpture/fashion and photography were all in Goerge’s Quay, so at least I was there when a space came free.
IsabellaParticipantmartin healy, his photographs are really beautiful and he’s made some interesting video pieces (if you’re into that kind of thing). funnily enough he studied photography through sculpture when doing his degree….
have you thought about doing an MA? might aswell move up the scale rather than sideways…
smbeeMemberHow love to do MA!!!! That would be great.. When I left LSAD all them years, totally broke – I took a crappy ‘Mc job’ in retail until I got my feet on ground, save up – get a studio space and plan the plan the next step. The problem being I never got my feet on the ground, continued with my ‘Mc career’ so Art got put to one side. I don’t have anything like a strong enough body of work for MA.
IsabellaParticipantlots going on in Lk at the mo art wise, lots of open submission exhibitions, studios etc. under ‘creative limerick’. i guess id hold onto the job while its still there. to be honest id say you’re better off trying for MA than do another degree. why not call down to the college and have a chat with some of the tutors about it? BA seems more about training a process of thought and analysis. maybe do the LCFE to get back into the swing of it and move from there?
