A Cormorant or a Shag!!

I wasn’t going to post this one but nfl-fan posted one and it struck a chord in my head. It also brought up a question for all of you birdie people. Is a cormorant also known as a shag or are they two different species?? Tis’ bugging me. :?

These are a few of the residents down by Hook Head lighthouse from the Slade side. There were more but a red jacket breaking the horizon does ruffle a few feathers. It’s well worth a revisit though (d’ya hear me guys?)

    Wow…interesting composition!

Beautiful shot really…clear as a bell.

I can’t believe there isn’t a drop of eye contact and it is still just a really cool shot.

The plummage of the birds is so well defined.

I’ve heard of them being called Black Birds..as well as Cormorants.

That other word…can be a haircut…carpet…and a few other things  but I am pretty sure…not a bird???

Excellent photo whatever they are

Robbie Not on those rocks I hope   :lol

As Sharon said no eye contact with any of them was it something you said like ” are any of you a SHAG”? one way to get them to turn their back on you.

They are of the same family (pelican I believe) the Cormorant being the
bigger of the two, Shag is Phalacrocorax aristotelis and the Cormorant
    is Phalacrocorax carbo…………ain’t Google wonderful!!

These are Cormorants I’d say. Shags have a little “quiff” of feathers on its
head (dont know what else to call it? maybe crest would be better) during mating
    season.

Like the shot by the way, would maybe crop a bit more off the top the waves are
    making me dizzy.

I’m with shutterbug about the crop.

They are a common bird around my neck of the woods and are content in fresh or saltwater.

With good reason. There were more of them but they…ahem, shagged off! These souls waited but if there was any reality in their perceived threat they could fly away from the threat, and not towards it.

    Cheers,

These are cormorants, but they can be very hard to tell apart at times. I won’t
even bore you with an attempt at listing differences because there are so many
    qualifications.

    It’s a smashing photo.

Good shot. It reminds me of that old joke, modified for this photo you know!!! ‘Whats the difference between a cormorant and a shag?…..You can beat a cormorant! Ok the original joke was ‘an egg and a ….!’ The look like they are looking out for something! lol well with a title like that what did you expect eh?!
Pretty good detail and very sharp, well spotted.
