A great read and like BM had to read the full story. Thank God we have “beyond reasonable doubt” in our justice system.
If the UK had the death penalty in the 70s, the Birmingham 6 and Guilford 4 (and possibly the Maghuire 7) would have been killed …

Interesringly, the article pointed out that it is cheaper to incarcerate a prisoner for life than to pay for the lengthy appeals process …

Law in Texas is a complete joke
Interesting read. All too familiar though where evidence seems to be ignored until hindsight is applied.
I never could understand the death penalty. Yes, it will stop the “offender” re offending but hurts their family more. It’s a sentence by proxy.

I finally read this article on the print version yesterday evening. Very interesting – what struck me was that so many people decided from the outset he was guilty (e.g. his own lawyers). They had their minds made up, didn’t ask questions.
I’ve been a subscriber to this magazine for the past 4 years or so, its outstanding, I’d really recommend it. The only downside is that I don’t read so many books anymore, its easier to flip through the 10 pages of a New Yorker article than launch into some 300 page novel.
