Some useful tutorials I stumbled across here http://images.photoworkshop.com/rebelxtlessons/interface.html – I think someone linked to the site in another thread about the Sports Illustrated articles. Lesson 18 – Beyond Basic Flash Photography very clearly explains how the E-TTL system works. It may start out a bit basic for you, since you’re already doing weddings, but it explains well what the flash does in each of P, Av, Tv and M.

Yep – there’s quite a bit of useful information over at Photoworkshop.com. I’m a frequent visitor, although I hate the fact that the Canon part of the site is flash-based. But I think it’s well designed flash as it loads reasonably quickly over my dial-up link.

re: focus recomposing – “even an inch of error in that case is about as significant as a fart in a tornado.” and I quote thorsten’s link. Cracking piece. You have to read to the bottom.

Don’t forget that statement was made in the context of the depth of field of a subject at 50+ yards, in which case it is entirely accurate.

Crap, sorry, I came across all wrong. I agree with what he is saying…and I understand that the effect is more significant at shorter distances and less so at longer distances.

I merely found his analogy humourous. And I wanted to draw attention to that. And I also wanted to let you know that I appreciated the link, and found the article interesting. And read right to the bottom. :)

hi Derek – i always focus on the eye and recompose too. However i only ever have one focus point activated on my camera (normally the centre one) and my results with on camera flash are generally pretty good.
