A large amount of old stones (one pic)

This is Beaghmore Stone Circles, Rows and Cairns, Co. Tyrone. During peat cutting this large complex of stone circles, pairs of stone circles, stone rows and cairns were discovered and excavated. They date back to the late Bronze Age, about 3,000 years ago. Some people think of this place as a school for stone circle builders as the circles are all a bit haphazard and none of the rows or circles are aligned with any particular feature in the landscape or astronomic event. One is like a buckled bicycle wheel! Some experts on the other hand (and I tend to agree) see this as a last ditch attempt by the farmers on this land to restore fertility to the land as it became overgrown with the encroaching thick blanket bog that leaves the land useless for agriculture. Who knows what rituals took place here in absolute desperation at being abandoned by whoever they saw as their ‘god’. Even now you can see some shape of manic or frenzied desperation in the arrangements, one stone circle has nearly 1,000 small jagged stones neatly set upright inside it!
RodcunhaParticipantCianMcLiamParticipantHi Rodchuna, it was actually taken with a cokin ND Grad filter placed upside down so that the top edge (almost black) lined up roughly with the near horizon but with a bit of a slant to avoid the hill on the left. Desperate times call for desperate measures! My hard stop grad is scratched pretty badly and I havent been able to find a replacement yet. I wouldnt really recommend this technique except in emergencies, as you can see the filter actually gets lighter rather than darker towards the top of the frame where it should do the opposite, plus you need a very flat horizon and then stop down to f22 using depth of field preview to see exactly where the edge lies. Better than no sky though!
I’ll dig out the original raw file for comparisson :)
RodcunhaParticipantthanks for the details Ken, although an emergency measure it worked out very nice and a quite nice shot!

Rod
