Hi folks how’s she cutting
Myself and the Arrow have started cycling to get a bit fitter
Sean got himself a new bike and I am sticking with my trusty mountain bike for now
reason is I dont really like the turn down racing bike handle bars
I have done a few sponsored cycles for charity but nothing serious
So I was wondering if the cyclists on here could help out with a bit of
a training plan,We are doing 7-12 miles a day at the moment but not to many hills as suchSo the question to the cyclists is what sort of training should we be at mileage wise
And any suggestions about bikes for myself when I dump the old mountain bike would be great
I was in my local bike store and the guy said you need to spend at least €600 for a decent bike :shock:Thanks Cathal
Good stuff Cathal,
with regard to what type of bike, there have been some good suggestions of mountain bikes and hybrids (the link you posted was a hybrid)
if you end up buying a mountain bike, I suggest you invest in a good set of slick tires, knobbly mountain bike tires will slow you down a bit on the road.
I’d second Mc Conveys in Belfast as a place to shop, I bought a mountain bike from there last year, thought the service was great, they will set everything
up for you, make sure the bike is the right fit and make appropriate adjustments, most bike shops should be able to do this for you, if they are not prepared
to do that, I wouldn’t buy from them.
Specialized bikes are class, can’t go far wrong with them.I’d second Gigi’s suggestion of chain reaction also.
I think the training would very much depend on how Sean’s hip is coming on, I’d imagine the hills might be a bit taxing on it, I’d be inclined to say if he has to
get out of the saddle on the hill, it’s perhaps too steep (at this stage) or the gear is too heavy.
I’d agree with Alan’s advice, conversation pace, but I’d add short sentence conversation, and not long paragraph conversation.Do get yourself some good cycling shorts, they do make a big difference in terms of comfort. Just in case you didn’t know, they are made to be worn next to the skin.
Anyone that cycles without a helmet is a complete eejit…
nfl-fanParticipantI’m getting a new bike sometime this week too.
There’s a Governent Cycle to Work Scheme where they’ll give you a voucher for up to €1000 and you get half the money back in the form of a tax break.
Me voucher is in Dublin so will collect it tomorrow and head down to the local bike gaff (support local) at the weekend.
Maybe Donnelly, The Arrow and I should run a compo and see who loses the mostest weight over the next couple of months?

cathaldParticipantThe arrow got himself a pair of those shorts and I must get myself a pair also
I will get in contact with Giorgio in the art nute section to see what type of socks he wore……….
As for the cycle to work scheme it looks like a great deal but I am not working at the moment
Perhaps the rock and role will sign up to itCathal
jessthespringerParticipantThey do that cycle to work scheme up here too, great job… The limit is £1000, but bikes shops will work something out for you if you fancy the look of something over that.
There are different schemes, but it seems to work out around a 50% saving.nfl-fanParticipantAye… I applied for €800… I just plan on spending it on whatever takes the fancy. If I can get herself and myself a bike then I will.
5faytheParticipantHi John,
With all the exercise you get cycling you could end up
looking as fit as that Giorgio guy. :?John.

Just you give us a few months John and we will be walking round like those guys
in the film 300 with the 6 packs on show
and if we give up the cycling we will wear them anyhow to the next trip to the wexjessthespringerParticipantThese type of shorts are great, two layers, baggy on the outside, like normal shorts,
but with the padded cycling short on the inside. For those who prefer not to parade around in lycra.
