A question for the cyclists

Do some slow stretches after you come home…it eases the stiffness and helps the blood flow and makes the following day easier. Use light gears when on the road…no need to go hard. If you keep this up for a month or so you’ll find that you won’t be sore but you’ll want to push yourself a little. Maybe a hill that gave you grief a month earlier now can be ridden that little bit faster or easier. But the main thing is take it easy. You exercise on a bike at surprisingly low speeds. It isn’t like running where you’re gulping air.

Seeing as we’re sorta on the topic… can I get a couple of rants off my chest about cyclists… Dublin experiences but would apply to any large urban area:

    1. Cyclists who use the path… ok, not the end of the world… but the ones that start ringing their bell at you when they want you to get out of their way… I hope they can imagine what it would be like to have their arse ringing every time they went for a crap cos it will happen one of these days.

    2. Cyclists who use bus lanes, even though there’s a dedicated cycle lane right beside it… makes no sense at all, none, but it does happen… as recently as this morning… the bus driver gave a polite honk of the horn and was given a two finger salute in return.

Needed to get that off me chest… I’m an angry person.

    Huh? You? No way!

I’d agree though about the arrogance of some on bikes…it gives all cyclists a bad name. But another thing that gets on my gut from a cyclist point of view are the cycle paths. Not the purpose built paths, the marked off areas on roads. This is where all the glass, stones, debris, etc gets thrown and this is the place where you puncture most. During one spell I had 13 punctures in 11 days. Thankfully tyres and puncture resistance has improved since but cycle lanes are a token gesture.

And someone had a bell on their bike??? Technically speaking it’s illegal not to have a bell on your bike (I kid you not) but it’s something you rarely see apart from possibly the large urban areas.

The cycle lanes are pretty good in Dublin… and by not using them and choosing to use the bus lanes, when you’ve a queue of 46As, 46Bs, 145 and Wicklow/Wexford commuter buses, it’s sorta gives one a pain in the hole.

At the very least GTF out of the way when a bus wants to get by.

One thing I do notice more is how stupid car drivers are
myself and Sean along with Sean’s two boys who are 9 & 11
were cycling to Greencastle a few mile down the road from Sean’s house
The youngest boy was beside me and this p***k in his car was coming along behind
and decided to stand on his horn to let us know he was there
He could have scared the young lad and made him fall off
After a few finger waves from me and I offered him to stop he decided to drive on
It was just a pity he was not stopped in the village when we got there as I would have stood on his horn

On another note a young member of a local cycling club was out training last week when a car
pulled up along side him and pulled him of his bike causing serious injury to him and his bike
    There are some assholes around

It’s becoming a frequent event around these parts too. Only a couple of years ago a guy from Enniscorthy had the experience where a car pulled up along side him and someone gave him a belt of a stick then drove on. There was also a news report in the local paper around the same time where 3 guys in a pub were overheard discussing what type of bull bars cause most damage. This was overheard by a garda member of the local cycling club. Boy Racers had tended to terrorize people on bikes too but that avenue of fun seems to have fallen off.
It’s fine to give gestures Cathal but remember that in a contest between a cyclist and an irate motorist statistics show the cyclist will come off worst. It’s a tough one to cope with but it’s reality.

Just an idea… and seeing as we all love the equipment…

Has anyone thought about getting the bicycle car radar, missle launcher, flame thrower, car tyre piercing upgrade kit?

Just be sure and get yourself the shotgun residue removal kit and the special goggles and gloves for launching the missles.

You also might want to think about the extra weight… some high pressure tyres and a weight balancing kit.

Then if you’re on the road you might want to check out the slick version of the high pressure tyres.

If you going with the slicks then you might want to consider the special edition slick brake kit.

But if you have the extra weight of the missles and shot gun then you will need the extra weight edition of the slick brake kit.

But these add extra weight… so you might want to think about the extra, extra weight balancing kit and the extra, extra weight high pressure tyres.

Just don’t forget the spokey dokey’s Cathal, you could get some specially made ones (carbon fiber, of course) little camera shaped ones that make shutter noises as they slide up and down the spokes. :D

    Grip time for me….
Can someone answer a couple of questions for me – are the ordinary, everyday front bicycle lamps not sold out there anymore?
Isn’t it illegal not to have one? Is there a shortage??
We should generate a petition to bring bring the bicycle lamps back. That way the cyclist might be seen during the winter evenings, particularly if they insist on wearing dark clothing!!!

When LED lights hit the market first they were thought to be non-legal as they weren’t classed as “lights” for some bizarre reason. I think sanity prevailed when it was discovered they were brighter than conventional bulb lights. The insanity nowadays is that you can pay up to €1,000 for a set.

    Interesting idea Cathal-
But bearing in mind the problem of additional weight,
    as nfl correctly pointed out,
might it not be better to make a frame with two open ended top tubes?

Then, when you’re out with your son, you could actually ride shotgun…

Surprised nobody’s thought of it before…
