Not Pete the blokeParticipant
Not my usual type of subject, but I like to try a bit of everything……. :)
I liked the colours but found composition and framing very difficult.Comments and critique very welcome for a novice at this type of shot.
earthairfireParticipantIt’s difficult to know how to critique this without knowing what kit you’re using. I’m assuming by your avatar picture that it’s an SLR, perhaps with macro lens?
I’ll base my critique on that, anyway – apologies if I touch on things that aren’t possible if you’re using a different cam! I’ll also base my critique on you stating “novice” so apologies if I come across as at all patronising, it’s not meant to be!
Overall, I like the composition, with off centre interest, and a nice narrow depth of field to draw attention to the focal point. I’d maybe have been tempted to pull the orange centre of the flower down and to the right a bit so it’s even less central.
The scene looks well focused on the centre of the flower. Maybe a slightly narrower depth of field would have accentuated this even more than is currently done. Either a wider aperture, or standing further away and zooming in further would achieve this.
The main area which I feel could have been improved is lighting. Other than the tweaks above, I think the camera work is spot on. How did you light this? It looks like perhaps natural light from top RHS. A simple reflector directing light onto the front of the rose would have made a huge amount of difference to the shot, and really lifted the petals off the page.
Overall, a strong image – perhaps give the above some consideration for your next shot, and if it makes it look worse, just ignore me in future
If you need any clarification, feel free to ask – hope it helps!

Noely FParticipantIts a little soft but with the orange glow it adds to the shot.I like the lighting as it is,doesn’t seem to be any blow out.
It’s a very warm image…if that makes sense
