Decided to head down to Loughshinny during some stormy weather to try to get some moody photos… Managed to get soaking wet in the process and got some very strange looks from people in the area :D
Good on you for getting out there. Plenty of landscape opportunities even on the dreariest of days.
I think that half a stop less exposure would have made all the difference here. The white water is a bit bright. Although saying that, the sky looks fine.
Did you use a grad filter? If so, I would probably have suggested 1 stop less strength to balance the sky and sea.
The composition is very good and I think this really could have been a cracker if the sea was just a little darker.
Yes – I used a 2 stop ND grad for this…but I think that I was a bit over-zealous with photoshop on the sea and might have dodged it a bit too much… I didn’t notice how bright the water was myself – but now that you mention it I see what you mean :D
I suspect the problem here is not so much that the water is too bright but that the exposure was too long and the whitecaps have ‘painted’ the whole area where they’re most active white, so you lost detail that way.
It’s worth noting that when using grads you don’t want to overly darken the sky – if the sky is darker than the foreground (as it is here) it’s called violating tonal hierarchy and looks unnatural.
Nice composition otherwise, the foreground is very good – especially the lines of rocks leading into the foam and the green ones in the near foreground.
