Action shots….. advice needed!

    Hi Folks

advice needed please. I was at the basketball game recently trying to get some good action shots….problem was i could’nt get above a shutter speed of more than 1/50sec so my photos were all blurred!

First i decided to raise the ISO and ended up going as high as 800.
I was shooting with the camera set on program and then i started using the flash also.

I must have missed most of the 1st half of the game messing around with the camera settings:?
Anyway then i got on to shooting manual which did’nt really make much difference.Although I may have got higher shutter speeds but the images were just darker!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. what Camera set up should i have gone for?…do i need flash in these circumstances?

    Thanks

    Fast Lens – F2.8
Higher ISO Setting – Camera gathers light quicker
Smaller Aperture Setting – Larger opening of the lens allows more light to reach the sensor quicker

Sometimes the likes of Yahoo NBA or SI.com they have EXIF embedded on their sports images and you can see what the pros are shooting… but these games also have pro levels of arena lighting.

Your image above was shot at 1/50th second which is far too slow for sports. I’d say to freeze the action you’d have to be looking towards 1/200 sec and faster.

For US college and NBA basketball, they’re allowed mount flash before the game. These are generally mounted above the ring, high in the rafters.

Here, you’re in a tough spot.

You need fast glass. f/2.8 would be the bare minimum. Even at that, if you can get very close, a 50mm f/1.4 might be needed.

Other than that, you need to boost your ISO. 800 is clearly not enough, so you may have to push it to ISO 1600. That should get you 1/100 speed. That may still not be enough to freeze the action.

Other than that, try and try again.
