Adobe Lightroom
-
Not Pete the blokeParticipant
I downloaded Adobe Lightroom after a recommendation on another thread from Steve D. I had been using Adobe Bridge (which is part of CS2) to review files and ‘rank’ them direct from the CF card after a shoot. With a 4GB CF card, there can be hundreds of images, and my computer would freeze for long periods and Bridge just couldnt cope with the large file sizes etc.
Lightroom is unbelievable at quickly showing the complete files from a CF card. Literally like night and day difference between the two. Bridge is not fit for purpose. Lightroom does the job perfectly. WOWThorstenMemberHave you tried Phase One’s Capture One yet! After DPP, this is my favourite RAW converter.
ValentiaMemberI absolutely love it. It is a bit clunky and memory intensive but the work flow and versatility appeals to me. I’m finding that I can work faster and have more intuitive control than with any other imaging software that I have previously used. It’s not perfect but it will improved, especially with its modular design.
SteveDParticipantnolongerParticipantI kinda like it as well. Not sure if I want to use it vs Bibble just yet, but it’s a nifty little app all right.
davenewtParticipantI definitely find lightroom best from a workflow point of view. I installed Bibble the other evening and I can’t get my head around it. Spent ages looking for the way to convert a shot to black and white using the channel mixer… couldn’t find it.
Back to lightroom I think.
May be an idea to get off my arse and take advantage of the introductory pricing while it lasts…!
One thing that bugs me about lightroom is the rotate tool. At least in the latest beta I have installed at the moment. Really tricky to rotate in small increments, unless you type in the numbers manually. But then, when you do it that way, you don’t have the benefit of the grid overlay. Has that changed in the latest version?
D.
ValentiaMemberDave, you can download a fully functional V1.0 that lasts for 30 days. The full version is very different from the beta.
davenewtParticipantThanks Danny, actually downloaded that the other night but haven’t gotten around to installing just yet. Sadly, it’s my “something for the weekend” :-)

Damn. Tried installing but I get an error 1316 – network error trying to read a certain file :-( Tried re-downloading in case there was an issue with the download, but same again. Have “opened a case” with Adobe.com to see if they get back to me with anything!
My experimentation with v1.0 will have to wait.
It’s a Friday night, I should be out.
How sad, huh?

D.ThorstenMemberHave just been reading an interesting comparison of Lightroom -v- DPP which raises some of the pro’s and con’s of each. Might help other (canon) users decide whether Lightroom is worth spending money on or not. And if there are any users here using both, what’s your take on it?
Not Pete the blokeParticipantMy enthusiasm has been somewhat dampened after several glitches. I have realised that the ‘speed’ of loeading was not from a CF card full of RAW images, but in fact from a folder containing processed RAW (ie TIFF) images. I have also had problems when trying to process in CS2 direct from Lightroom. All in all I am beginning to think that I am going to stick with DPP.

What kind of problems Ross? Did you know that if you right-click any image, there is an option to edit in CS2?
Not Pete the blokeParticipantSteve
Sometimes when I select several images and then choose the option ‘photo’ and ‘edit in photoshop’ nothing happens other than a duplicate image appears in Lightroom but nothing happens in CS2. I try it again and end up with a third duplicate. Plus my Lightroom does not seem to recognise that I have CS2 installed. I had to manually select photoshop.exe as the otpion in ‘photo’ menu. Maybe I should try re-installing because my trial period runs out in 15 days and I would like to make a final decision whether to buy or not.SteveDParticipantbrandyman wrote:

When you export, you are exporting 16 bit tiffs, about 50MB each. You need a fairly powerful system to make it run quickly, but I believe you just purchased a new laptop so processing power isn’t the problem.
If it isn’t recognising CS2 automatically, then maybe it is a problem with Windows itself, rather than Lightroom? Would be worth doing a reinstall to restore everything back to the defaults.
Let me know how you get on.
