Adobe Lightroom Beta for Windows!
-
nolongerParticipant
For those of you on Windows, the Adobe Lightroom beta was just released. You can grab it by going to this page
nolongerParticipantUpdate: just played with it. It is sloooooooooow. With a single 5mb NEF file loaded, it was using over 125mb of memory! Rawshooter it is, so :)
ciaranParticipantOUCH
Thanks for saving me the effort in downloading it and installing it. I think I’ll hang on for just a little while before having a peek at it.
In a way I’m gutted! I’ve only started to get the hang of Photoshop and now they go come out with a completely different piece of software :(

What kind of machine was that slow on ? Also how much memory did the machine have ? I heard the specs of it are quite high. I think the application may need 125 mb memory to run – but that doesnt mean that it needs that much per file – it could be that it uses that much working on 50 files too, kind of like ms word needing x amount of ram even for a 1 character of text file (admittedly havent messed around with it yet).
nolongerParticipantThat was on a 2.5ghz P4, with 1.5gb of RAM. And realistically, it’s not just that it uses lots of memory… it is also SLOW to DO anything. Takes a bloody AGE for it to apply any changes you make (and while it’s doing it, you’re just sitting there watching it say “Working…”) – 7 seconds to apply a white balance setting is actually mental. I’ll hold off until they have a new version out that works a bit better.
gerardkParticipantvinnyioMemberI run CS2 and have lots of performance issues with Photoshop lag. Bridge is incrediblly slow.
I have a an AMD 2.16 Barton chip with 1gb ram
Now here’s the thing. I found Adobe Lightroom great on speed. It was refreshingly fast.
My problem with it was that the workflow was not intutitive enough for me. It didn’t seem very well thought out.BurtParticipantI have tried Lightroom on a windows system and it seems to be very responsive in comparison to CS2 on the same machine. Its not a rocket but if your comparing it to CS2 you wont be disappointed. Like CS2 though it needs lots of ram, lots of ram meaning all the ram you can fit in your computer, anything less than 1G is a waste of time i think.
Lightroom is a Beta version at the moment so its not a finished product, Adobe want to know what we think it needs to add to the programme so theres no point in complaining later, try it now and email them your suggestions for improvements (or post on their forums). It has the potential to be a superb tool for anyone doing high volume work.nolongerParticipantThe thing is, Burt, that when you compare it to Rawshooter, it is a heaving behemoth of a dinosaur. Rawshooter is just SO much better, and now Adobe has bought them out and intends to discontinue Rawshooter in hopes of getting us all to adopt Lightroom.
Mick451ParticipantBurtParticipantAntifuse,
I have compared it to Rawshooter which I use regularily. For Product or Landscape photography Rawshooter is very good, it produces very detailed conversions but that if you need to process a few hundred files which contain people Rawshooter is a TOTAL non runner. Its almost impossible to get good skintones consistently unless you painstainkly convert each file individually.
Its also not really possible to compare Rawshooter with either Photoshop or Lightroom. Rawshooter is really only a Raw conversion programme while CS/lightroom give you much more scope for editing your files after conversion.
I was delighted to heat that Adobe have bought out Rawshooter, Rawshooter engineers are now part of the lightroom design team so we will all benefit by having a very well rounded conversion and editing tool.
The Rawshooter developers had always intended on selling out to one of the big players, it was obvious, you cant make money by giving away your software for free which is what they were doing, very few people ever upgraded to Rawshooter premium. Its fortunate that it was Adobe who they went with rather than one of the other options.nolongerParticipantHrmm… well I have tend to go through all my photos individually anyway, rather than mass-applying settings, and it’s truly painful in Lightroom. But that’s fine, it’s just a beta. Maybe they’ll speed things up down the road, and if so, I’ll give it another shot. For the time being, though, Rawshooter suits me just fine :)
LoGillParticipantTo briefly answer your question Mick – Rawshooter and Lightbox are Free post processing tools similar to Photoshop Elements… i think ?
Lorraine
nolongerParticipantRawshooter is strictly for processing RAW image files. Lightroom, I believe, is a bit more flexible. :)
