Adobe Technical Notes for Transition from Film to Digital

I know a lot of people in this forum have made a lifestyle choice to use and learn more about film. Silver halides have a much more mysterious quality than silicon capturing light as a series of numbers. I taught film photography for over 10 years and I still haven’t beaten the sheer thrill of seeing a 10×8 just ‘appear’ in the developer tray. In digital terms I propably never will.

But if anyone is trying to make the transition from film to digital (don’t shoot me, there just might be one or two :D ) then Adobe have just released a technical document which looks at all the issues that film photographers have concerns about.

In fact many Digital Photographers would benefit from having a look at it as well.

    Check it out here http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/phscs2ip_filmtodig.pdf

With all due respect DigitalBeginner, this type of post is not only inflammatory but theres a conflict of interest here aswell. Post this type of information elsewhere please.

I dont have a problem Brandyman. Posting a PDF in a Film Photography forum with such an anti-film conclusion is unfair. Theres other places on the site for this info, yes of course theres useful information in it, but put it elsewhere.

That’s a fair point, really. Though I think you may find that PaddyJoe’s comments are not wide of the mark – he who pays the piper etc.

    It was an interesting article.
I’d never have searched for it.

Look Guys. I put this up because I thought it was of interest. Anyone who can make their way through this document doesn’t need our help in any way, so the idea that this was some stalking horse to get students is way off the mark.

I have already requested a review of this topic and have indicated my preference to have it deleted.

That’s not really necessary. I think Fintan was just saying it belongs in another section.

DBs post totally looks fine to me. He is simply providing a link to some information for anyone interested in moving from film.

And I dont regard the article’s conclusion as ‘anti-film’ at all. It is merely stating a fact, namely that film has ceased to be the dominant force.

‘…The days of film?s dominance are now coming to an end. But though our means have changed, in the end, photography itself is more about photographers and their gift for seeing and recording the world than the tools that they happen to use. But better tools only advance the craft side of photography, and you can be sure to look forward to further improvements.’

It seems most of the replies have missed my point.

#1 This PDF would be more approprite in another forum, we do have one for Digital Photography. Its more a general briefing on digital really.

#2 This PDF says “Digital photography has better image quality than film” Most people with commercial interests in digital photography would like us to believe that.

Can we not please keep the Film Photography forum for just Film Photography please. Is that too much to ask? Its my favourite part of this website and I’d like it to stay that way.

Regardless of whether the thread is in a film forum or a digital forum (and argument can be made for either being appropriate), it’s an interesting article.
