Advice needed

Am looking to buy a lens for my D700 for wildlife / birds. Looking at both the Nikon 80-400mm and the Sigma 150-500mm. Appreciate views on each and particularly from anyone who has used both.
I have the sigma 120-400 os
and its not bad, the os is a little slow, and its not as sharp as the canon 400L i used to have but its not bad, and really quite cheap
What about Nikon 300 f/4 and some extenders? In my opinion it should be the best budget-friendly option when you also want some quality.
