Advice on a new camera in euro800-1000 range
-
nbParticipant
Hi folks.
Have been using a kodak 6490 as a hobby for a year or so and want to step up and take a few more courses.
Have approx 800-1000 euro to splash on a new camera.
Can you recommend a good all rounder?
Interested in snapping portraits, sports and hoping for something sharp in low light, any info would be appreciated!SteveFEMemberAny of the new entry level DSLRs (EOS400D, Nikon D40/50, Pentax K10D or K100D, Olympus E500) are in your range, and should be paired with their manufacturer’s 50mm f/1.8 or similar prime for the best results in low light. Alternatively a lightly used higher end model would do the same job with more speed and class (EOS 20/30D etc). I won’t make any suggestions on make, they’re all good, and you should investigate http://www.dpreview.com or reader’s opinions here before deciding. And try to get your hands on a few to see how they feel and operate for you. The best camera is the one you like using!
LoGillParticipantWelcome aboard :D
I think for your budget there are plenty of options for you to consider as Steve has pointed out.. the question has been asked often here on the forum and I’m sure you will get a lot more advice … but in the meantime … so before you head off to the shops ;) take a look through a couple of the threads for advice and views.

OatesyParticipantHey nb.
dont rule out buying from abroad, check ebay.com for camera kits deals,
I got my nikon d70s with a Sigma 28-70mm lens Sigma 70-300mm lens, 2 gig flash card and a few other accessories
including a hard carry case and filters for just under ?1000 ,, and thats including customs import duty taxBrian_CParticipantThe class leader in this range is the Sony Alpha 100. Give us an update on what you went for in the end.
arginiteParticipantTry this guy.
Really great service and prices.
I ordered a Canon 400D + EF-S 17-85mm IS f/4-5.6 and Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM on Tuesday the 6th and will have them by Monday the 12th.
The 400D and 17 -85 came to about ?1042 including shipping.
Shipping is a little expensive as its comming from hong kong, but will save in the long run.SetantaBParticipantHi Oatsey/Arginite,
I know the local suppliers ( Irish/UK sourced) rather then grey importers emphasise the warranty and power flow issues as reasons not to import – have you had any issues with your import – do you get any warranty that you can bank on?
Am embarking on a change myself and am curious. ThanksAlan

Shay.
OatesyParticipantpower wasnt a problem, mine came with the charging dock and the american plug. just used an irish plug in the charging dock that was from my camcorder and it works fine. as for warrenty. you probably will have to pay extra for an international warrenty. im pretty sure i dont even have one . :) just have to be extra careful
