Advice on flash please!

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping you can help me (I love this site!).
I’m looking to buy a nice flash for my Canon 400D. Next year I hope to by the Canon 5D mkII (yes I’m saving already!) and I would like the flash (if possible) to be compatible with that also.

I do a fair bit of event and dance photography so I’m thinking that something with a tilt-able head would be best but to be honest I really don’t have a clue as I so rarely use a flash.

Can anyone give me any advice on what to buy? Nothing that will break the bank please!
Also what additional kit so people recommend? Diffusers? etc..

if you want to do it right, buy a speedlite 580 MKII and maybe an omni bounce diffuser

but thats not the cheapest on the market but should serve you well for years to come

I picked up a 580ex MkII from Digital Rev on ebay for under €300.

Agree with the lads above … I have a 430ex and the 580exII and the latter is what I use all of the time …

Wow it’s seems like there’s one clear winner so!

Thanks for your advice everyone and I’ll get saving to treat myself to it as a Christmas present!
