Advice on lens fungus info AND error 01

Hi folks, I’m just after a bit of advice from those who have more experience with lenses.

I bought a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS second hand for waaay below market value last week. It was sold as having some fungus and an error code 01 when mounted to a canon body. From what I’ve read, error 01 is often related to a dodgy IS system. I got some service repair quotes to address the fungus and the error for £2-300. This still put the lens quite a ways below 2nd hand market value so I took a risk on it.

I fully expected to send it straight off for repair when it arrived, but when I mounted it to my (battered) 30D there was no error code, it focused perfectly, and the IS system worked. The fungus is about 1cm x 0.5cm at the peripheral of the lens. It looks like a crystal pattern. It doesn’t show up in pictures, even when stopped down to f32 and shoot a piece of plain white paper.

So I’m just after some advice. The error code may be intermittent. The fungus may continue to get worse. Is it worth getting checked out?

Here are a few samples with it. It does everything I want it to as it is. I just want it to keep that way.

    Please and thank you!

If you don’t want all your other lenses and some parts of the camera get infected… then yes.

In the meantime, don’t store it in the same bag as your other gear and take your lenses out for an airing. A quick clean to the camera won’t hurt either now.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH fungus on the lens???? Does a lens-fungus exist for real??? How it looks like??? Oh god… and How could I know if my lens got it?????

Thanks Zoltan. I’ll get it sent off asap.

Alessia, yes, it does exist. It’s a fungal growth in the lens caused by excessive moisture. Usually it doesn’t affect image quality in the early stages, but if left, it can eat into the glass and leave etching. More info here

I have all my gear most of the time in “dry boxes” with fungicide and desiccant packs, but I may be a special case.

Did you get that 2.8 from MPB? I think I spotted that one there as well, but wasn’t gutsy enough to take the chance ;) Images from it look pretty superb though. That said I had no idea fungus would spread and is actually capable of infecting other lenses/equipment, that’s pretty scary!

Do you still have the F4?

I keep the lenses I dont use regularly in a clear sealed box
with silica packs, loads of them.

I regularly take them out and put them on the window-sil
with caps off to let the UV light at them that kills off
    any spores.

It would be as well to get the lens seen to fi you have
factored that into the price initially. and it is the type of lens
that you could have for many many years so get that fungus
    stopped.

Judging from the shots taken with this lens, I think I would have been more concerned by the intermitant IS fault. This type of fault can occur at any time, and more often than not, just when you don’t want it. Because it is not a constant fault (error), it can also be one of the most difficult to diagnose and repair, but maybe it was just down to dirty electrical contacts on the lens, which could also be caused by the fungus growth.
