Hi all,
My first post! Was wondering for a couple of years was a forum like this in Ireland and could never find one! Anyway have a Fujifilm S5500 now for a year and half or so and I am anxious to take the step to Digital SLR as I am getting fed-up with the digital zoom and unpredictable focus. What are your opinions on the best Digital SLR (Preferably body plus lens inc in price) I could buy for about ?600 – ?1000ish??
CheersRobMemberHi Asterix and welcome to the forum. Just mentioned in another post that you should check out dpreview.com before committing to buying anything. You’ll can view side by side comparisons and detailed unbiased reviews on every available model before you make your purchase. If you have some idea of what your looking for to begin with, you shouldn’t have too much trouble making up your mind depending on your requirements and your budget. 8)
AsterixParticipantcarlParticipantThere is a lot of choice out there in the price range you are looking for. The most popular choices would be Nikon and Canon.
Nikon D50 6mp
Canon 350D 8mp (replaced by 400D)
Nikon D70s 6mp (replaced by D80)
Nikon D80 10mp
Canon 400D 10mp
(I include the number of megapixels as a guide and not something you should solely base your camera decision on.)To be honest you cant go wrong with any of the above cameras. Some have more features than others but they are all great cameras. If you intend to expand your collection of equipment i.e. lenses then your decision on a camera should be as much based on the quality and range of lenses/accessories as it is in the camera itself. In relation to the kit lens that comes with both systems I think the Nikon kit lens is probably slightly better than the Canon counterpart (but dont let that influence you too much if you intend to expand your system, my kit lens on my 350D is my least used lens  ). Make sure you try out the different cameras in a shop first as Canon and Nikon cameras feel different in the hand.
I havnt included the likes of Pentax as I know very little about the other systems available. Maybe somebody else can advise you there.
Anyway, good luck with your decision.
IOPParticipantHi Asterix, welcome to the forum!
A quick flick through the SLRs my students have would back up Carls’ advice.
For the complete uninitiated (which counts for most of my students) those on a tight budget seem to be choosing the Nikon D50 (about ?580 in Ireland) or the Canon 350D (about ?750 here). The 350D probably outnumbers the D50 by about 2 to 1.
Good luck with the decision.
AsterixParticipantthanks all,
Am going to start my research and of course save some money…if i manage to save enough i may go for the Nikon D80 with 18 – 135mm for ?1427…..may be wishful thinking that ill manage to save that much!LoGillParticipantAsterix wrote:

Go in to the shops and play around with all sorts, get the feel for them .. one of the main reasons I fell for my D200 was the feel of the body (steady !!)
Enjoy your research .. ;)
