Not necessarily looking for critique on this one, more advice on how to correct it…I probably should have used a little fill here, as the eyes seem too dark, but I’m not really sure how to correct them without affecting the overall image?? Or is is just underexposed?

Sod changing it. It’s a cracker. Made me laugh out loud with joy. What a wonderful expression the wee fella has.

Listen to Pete Tara; he’s wise beyond his years.
He’s also right. There’s nothing wrong with this image.

Pete & Rob – thanks so much for that! Just proves to me again what I already knew – I know nothing! I’m completely winging this photography lark :D

I thought that the white balance was off, but I will take your advice and leave it alone.

This little fella (my nephew) already has the ladies swooning at 4 and a half months….!!!

Lovely shot Tara :) I am presuming that you used the 50mm for this one. The quality is exceptional. I did a quick edit. I think it would make a difference if you ever went to print the image.

    1. Levels adjustment layer – basically bring in the levels so that you are exposing fort he babies face. Your exposure wasn’t too far off anyway, bit it will lift the face a bit. As a result of bringing the white point in, you do lose detail in the highlights (hat, bib, arm etc)
so create a mask and brush the detail back in.

    2. To bring out the eyes, you can dodge the highlights at around 8%. It make a subtle difference on the likes of web sized images, but it’s worth the effort when you go to print. I also did a selective sharpen on the eyes only. (around 30/40%).

3.Your colour space was Adobe RGB – not that you have to.. but it’s recommended that you use sRGB for displaying your images in web browsers.

I love the shot – gorgeous catch lights in the eyes, gorgeous expression.

Thanks Ali – that seems to have lifted the image nicely…
I get your instructions except for the bit about the mask and brushing it back in….if you could elaborate on that with some screen shots (pretty please) I could try and replicate it myself and learn something in the process…

    thanks!

No probs Tara, I didn’t save the psd but here’s another quick edit (Photoshop 7.0) with all of the layers. An example is probably a better way of explaining it.
