Hi … great site.
I have had an interest for years . I have been trying to take nice pics with cheap point and shoot type cameras . Most times it was a disappointment when I got home and uploaded them.
But my wife has offered me a chance to take my interest a little further now and gave me a budget of 350 to get an SLR . What are my options.
?
Im finding photography jargon a bit of a problem when looking at specs . I do intend to learn with some type of night class. But would like a camera first.
I was considering the canon 450d with a kit lens as a friend has one and swears by it. But getting one for 350 is a challenge . I dont want to have to upgrade 2 or 3 months down the line.
What do you guys recommend. I have till Christmas to find the right camera . So can wait to the right bargain to present itself.
brendancullenParticipantHi GS – your options for a DSLR & lens are fairly limited at €350.
The 450D is indeed a fine camera.
I just spotted a 1000D on adverts.ie for 350 – and this looked a fair deal. 300 would be the benchmark for a 2nd hand one…and this one sold for that price.
Argos are doing it brand new for €419

Maybe PC World, Harvey Normans etc may do a bit better.http://www.Donedeal.ie, http://www.buyandsell.netand http://www.ebay.ie are places to keep a daily eye on.
Try and stick with these two models as both have a good ‘live view’ LCD screen.
Later perphaps get the ’50mm f1.8 lens’ ~ available 2nd hand at about €70 and is a MUST buy for anyone on a tight budget.

The Fine PrintMemberYou get e.g. a used D60 and a new 18-55 kit lens, or 35/1.8 for about that.
MarkKeymasterFYI, the 50mm f1.8 lens is also reviewed here on PI ;)

edg3Participanti own a 50mm f1.8 and its an amazing lens, one of my favorites!
i picked it up on simplyelectronics.net for 86euro and a polarizing filter for a 12euro. its a brilliant lens well worth the cash!gsxr1Participanti was looking at this one. looks like great value and brand new. good saving over the .ie site
I have a uk address up north to send it to.

what do ya thinky
edg3Participantall i’d say is avoid pixmania. they are a nightmare, to get any information from, to cancel, to return to and the 3 times i’ve used them, once my item disappeared and twice it came so damaged that i had to pay for them to ship it back.
look up :
http://www.simplyelectronics.net/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
These guys are awesome. Not great on the phone, but you’ll have your item within 7 days of your order and they have a very good competitive price to. Hopefully im not breaking any rules showing you that link :)i’ve bought everything off them since i got my 550D.
tsergairlMemberi bought a sigma lens from pixmania and i didnt have any problems with these guys , i bohg the lens on friday and the lens came to me on tuesday next week , but i heard a lot of bad opininons about simplyelectronics (from our forum as well ) :-)
the other thing is, that 18-55mm IS (a new kit lens ) is not to bad and You can still take a fantastic pics with this lens :-)
take a look:http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=445986″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
chris
edg3Participantmaybe i just got unlucky :) i was waiting nearly 6 weeks for an idea, i tried ringing, cancelling and never got a response. The same DAY the item was sent out, i got a reply, saying it’d been sent and it was to late to cancel. I hate them i hate them i hate them. I’d rather spend extra in a shop then order off them :D
The 18-55mm IS that comes with the box set on Canons is an amazing lens. I sold mine as i’ve an 18-270mm Tamron with VR (Vibration Reduction) and it covered me.
A 50mm f1.8 is definitely worth getting. Versatile, and even thought its a fixed focal you’ll use it alot. I use mine more now then my 18-200mm!tsergairlMemberyeah maybe just unluck :-) , when i sent my money via visa , the girl from pixmania, called to me with confirmation about half hour later,
maybe they changed staff :-)a little OT:
18-270 – i want to buy this lens to my wife , she doesnt like change lenses on the body to often :-), and i heard that lens got a fantastic VR :-)50mm 1.8 – that the true, superb lens, ive got always connected to my camera, ;-) , :-) , and cheap and one more thing fronn of this lens does not rotate so there is no any problem to use with poly filter :-)
Chris
edg3ParticipantYeah the 18-270 i bought for not having to change lenses while i’m off on holidays and out and about :) the VR is amazing. the 18-200 i have has no VR great lens though. Tamron rock.
we’ve gone well off topic, well kinda. still talking about cameras :D
tsergairlMemberwell, lenses are still parts of cameras, so maybe Mark will be patient and will not close this topic ;-)
i know that 18-200 is a v good lens, but i need something universal with stabilisation, my lovely wife has got “chronic hands shaking” ;-)especially
with times 1/50 and longer :-) (Sorry Anna , dont hit me ) :-)any way – gsxr1 -1000d + kit is a good setup for start, or if You want to prefer start from a little higher level with low money U should look here:
http://photography.shop.ebay.ie/Digital-Cameras-/31388/i.html?_nkw=canon+eos+20d&_catref=1&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;gsxr1Participantthe lens jargon is getting the better of me here. Is there a link with basic lens terminology. I dont understand the numbers.
ssooooooooooooo green i am.
tsergairlMemberHi gsxr1
maybe just start here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_length” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
and after that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
or vice versa, i am serious NOT any sarcasm,
i had a link to fantastic web where they explain all shorts and symbols on the lenses in exmpl “L, EX, IS, OS, etc” but is in polish, and i could not find any similar web in eng:-(of course you can try translate this polish web via google translator, but i am not sure that english after this operation will be clear :-) here You are :-)
