Am I crazy, or will i take a chance…?

MailmanParticipant
I have been looking for a long zoom lens and spotted a “Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro AutoFocus Lens” (New) on the net for 125Euro or “Sigma Telephoto Zoom 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Autofocus Lens AND Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG High Speed Zoom Autofocus Lens (New) for 250Euro.
Are these modles any good? I am only new to photography and so dont need the best there is right now, but i dont what to buy complete sh#t* either.
Im also worried as they would be coming from the States and i’d get hit with customs. P&P is included in the price
Any advise would be great.Cheers,
Liam
JMcLParticipantHi Liam,
There are two very confusingly named Sigma f4-5.6 70-300mm lenses, one with “APO” in the name, the other without. The APO lens is a much better one than the other, and not that much more expensive – if you’re looking for a good long lens on a budget, you can’t go wrong with this. It can be identified by a red ring near the front (see here). I’d guess from the price the lens you’re seeing is the non-APO version. The other one I’ve never heard of, but it’s a very cheap lens (Warehouse Express list it for under ?80). There’s a review on Fred Miranda which basically says you can’t go wrong for the price.
Regarding customs, if it’s coming from the US you’ll almost certainly get hit for duty (6 or 7% on lenses – not sure exactly) and 21% VAT on the whole lot, plus probably a “handling fee” from whoever’s doing the delivery

FlipflipParticipantI got the 70-300 APO Macro the other day.
Excellent lens!!
I would highly recommend it!
MailmanParticipantHey guys thanks for the info. I may hold off purchasing this item from the States and see if i can find a good deal next week in Shanghai. I was out this weekend in Curragh Chase (its a 600 hectare Forrest Park in Limerick) buying my Coillte Christmas Tree, with plenty of of wildlife and beautiful scenery to be had, but i wish i had the above lens with me. It would have come in handy a few times.
So i should keep an eye out for :
Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO
Cheers again,
Liam
ExpresbroParticipantI’m another one who can vouch for that lens Liam. In fact if you do a search on the site you’ll find lots of great examples of shots taken with this lens. Madra Rua (Hauke) has some great examples. Obviously it has shortcomings, but for the price I doubt you could do better. :D
Oh and the APO version is definitely the way to go.

Yep, that’s the one. It’s probably the best you’ll do without spending 2-3 times the amount
