Am I spending to much for my first macro lens
-
Chuck EastwoodParticipant
Hi all, my first post here. I am looking at some macro lens for my Nikon D80 and I am going to the States in a month. They seem a hell of a lot cheaper over there. Is it worth trying to bring one back and risk getting hit with tax ?. Anyway I am looking at the Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP DI Macro 1:1 which is about 350 Pounds (390 euros) from Jessops and its 460 dollar’s (321 euros) in the states. would this be a good lens to start with or could you Pro’s :) recommend anything else for me.
shutterbugParticipantBuy right and your first macro will be your last and only macro! I dont know much about
the Tamron 90 but I have the Sigma 105 and I love it, I have read a couple of reviews
on the Tamron and it seems to be as good the Sigma. And welcome to the site too :)
paulParticipantI agree about buying right the first time.
A number of times I bought a cheap lens, only to then work out that it was not what I wanted and should have saved just a little longer to get the proper lens.
Since then, I make sure it’s the lens I want, before I buy. No point in buying a cheap macro only to discover shortly after that you really wanted the high quality one, that does a much better job.
Make sure you decide what you want (macro), and then do as much research as you can on the best lens to suit your needs. I don’t use Nikon so can’t be of much help there.
Chuck EastwoodParticipantThanks guys. I may have worded that wrong. I would love to spend a lot more if i had it. My better half has us booked in to see a personal shopper in new york on our first day of our hol’s. I declined the offer and i”m going to sneak off to a camera store i located near our hotel and hopefully pick up the lens + a few other bits. I have checked out some of the tamrom groups on flickr for this lens and i love some of the shots people are getting with it. I suppose i was just wondering if others had used it or are there other options i’m missing

I’ll be getting there about 2PM on a Monday .Drop off at the hotel , into a taxi and hope to be there before I fall asleep. Again any other suggestions are welcome
steelydanParticipant+ 1 for the Sigma 105 Macro, endless fun.
The Sigma 150mm is a good lens but heavier, you need to decide “weight” if you are going to hand hold a lot of shots, the 105 is light!!
It might not seem like an issue, but when its insects etc you are photographing, the slightest shake will end up with a lots of missed oppertunities.
