Am I using the bulb function on the Nikon D300 properly?

Hi All,

Just experimenting with the bulb function on the Nikon D300.

I had set the camera to Long Exposure in the Shooting Menu.
The camera was then set to manual single shot.
I attached the remote control release cable.
I turned the dial to bulb.

I clicked the remote button and it immediately took the photo.
I clicked a second time keeping my finger on the button this time.
When i lifted my finger of the remote button after a few seconds
– ie the shutter stayed open.
(Is this the delay for shake function – ie the shutter doesn’t open
for a few seconds in case the camera is still shaking?)

Using the stopwatch on my phone I clicked the remote button again after 2 mins.
I heard the shutter click closed. I saw the message “Job NR” flash repeatedly on
the camera for about another 3 mins and only then did the image appear on the
playback.

Is this normal? Am i using the bulb function correctly and what does “Job nr” mean?

Any help appreciated.

I googled “job nr Nikon” and it says nr is for noise reduction
so the camera is performing that function after the
photo has been taken (shutter closed0 and before
image display – this makes sense.

yep, switch off NR, as if you take a long exposure for say 10 min, then the camera will take another shot for 10min using the NR function, in total 20min, i personally dont use NR, i would use software to remove noise with lightroom .
