Amazon for lenses?
-
CageyParticipant
I’m currently looking at 70-200 2.8 third party lenses, they’re much cheaper on Amazon.co.uk, but seems a lot of sellers do not deliver here.
Anyone got any experience of buying through there? I’ve only ever purchased small things, like games and dvds on there, without issue. But something as big and heavy as a lens like that?
jodal1975Participanti have bought two lenses from them …very fast delivery (to a u.k address: i have a friend across the border) and no problems whatsoever
CageyParticipantMight be an idea that, have it sent to a friend in the UK and have them deliver it to me. It’ll still work out much cheaper than buying it here. The lens i’m looking at is almost €400 more expensive in Dublin!
pelagicMemberHave you thought about buying from B&H or Adorama and having a friend in the states ship it to you as a present?
Consider factory refurbished from those sources. Some folks say the quality control is better on refurb than new.
CageyParticipantYeah, prices are best Stateside. When i was over there last year I bought a 55-200VR for only $240 which was only about €160 at the time, might be more now. They were €260 in Dublin, a saving of €100, and had no problems bringing it back. Ended up selling it for what i paid for it. I rarely used it in the end. Was still mint.
I have no reliable contacts over there though., and it would probably cost a lot to send a 70-200, think those babies are about 4KG boxed.
jodal1975ParticipantshutterbugParticipantCheck out Mifsuds they have a very good range of secondhand gear and are very
quick posting, they will send to Ireland. Prices are not bad either.CageyParticipantI’ve had a look on misfuds, they’re not as cheap as amazon. trouble is, i can’t find shops on amazon that deliver lenses to here! I thought all UK based ones would no problem!
Do you think misfuds would do a bit of haggling? :D
shutterbugParticipantNo harm in trying, they can only say no. I suppose it depends on how long they
have had it in stock and if it is a popular lens then they may not budge. But always
worth a try. Good Luck!CageyParticipantI’ve found exactly what I’m looking for on Amazon. The tamron 70-200 f/2.8 – It’s cheaper than the sigma alternative, and after reading many reviews and looking at direct comparisons, the tamron is optically better. But, at the cost of AF speed. I don’t do sports or anything really fast moving, so that doesn’t bother me much. I would be using it for portrait, landscape [to get alternative views/compression/feel to my 17-50] and maybe the odd bird/wildlife shot [they can move fast, but I’ll take the hit or miss factor]
The shop I found to be selling it cheapest on Amazon is based in France. I should be ok for customs then? As it’s within the EU. They are called ‘NUMIPIXEL’ – anyone ever heard of or dealt with them? They have 100% rating, but only from 9 reviews.
CageyParticipantOk, interesting, just checked misfuds a bit more thoroughly, and they have the Tamron 70-200, used, for £399! I’ve emailed them enquiring about it’s condition, asking for images etc … see if they get back to me with what i need. Even though it is used, i think i’d prefer buying from the UK than france, just I got caught by customs a few times. Though that was gear from HK , but i’ve never heard of ‘NUMIPIXELS’ and at least people recommend misfuds. Though, i have read one horror story, where the guy was told the camera was mint, and it turned up as a ball of rust with loose screws, dirt and grime etc … they did refund him and apologise.
CageyParticipantUpdate: lunch time monday and still no reply to my mail :(
I told them I needed to know ASAP. Just sent them a reminder. Their website says they work sat & sun, limited hours at least. They’re losing a potential sale by being slow to respond.
shutterbugParticipantbrendancullenParticipantHere is a complete list of gear and UK suppliers – and right up to the second pricing. Jessops in Newry usually match Amazon prices.

CageyParticipantRinging them might be pricey, as they’re in the UK, and they could be the type to leave you on hold while they go check or whatever.
They did get back to me, and after initially being excited, as they offered to include p&p and throw in a filter … turns out it’s canon, and not Nikon mount. I wish their site was easier search through.
Cheers for that brendan, i’ll have a look.
It’s looking more and more like i’ll buy from the french store via Amazon, they also got back to me to assure me there wouldn’t be any hidden charges or anything. PLus, the lens would be brand new. I will check that link and have a look through though, if I spot better , of course I’ll go for it ;)
[edit] The lens i’m after is much more expensive in jessops than on Amazon.
I’ll probably go for it, and hope for the best :/
