Another dragonfly – well it is the season for it

A couple from yesterday. I was concentrating so much on getting close that composition seemed to go out the window. Both natural light shots. Unfortunately the dragonfly (Common Darter) was on a bridge and I couldn’t get further round the front without getting very wet and without a ladder! Both are uncropped (#2 is 1:1).

Also – i have never used photoshop and note that most people seem to process their images. i am thinking of getting Photoshop Elements rather than diving into the full package – is this wise?

Any comments / criticism? thanks for looking.

nice image! its a little soft in places but sharp where it counts which is the main thing. a few stops smaller apature could have made this perfect. its still really good though and im nit picking.

yes, get Photoshop elements 6. its terriffic. its missing a few features of photoshop, but most of the features are things novices or amateurs dont really use much, and considering the price difference ( 700 euros for Photoshop CS3 or 80 euros for elements 6).

it will amaze you what a few really easy tweaks in photoshop can do. every photo needs a bit of sharpening, color cast removal and levels adjustment. after that you can become artistic as you like with it. you can also recover photos you were sure were useless due to over/underexposure. saved a days shooting for me more than once when i stupidly used too high an iso setting or metered on the wrong aream highly recommended.

Thanks very much for the reply. Yes – I should have tried to push the aperture. I tried to think of why I didn’t but i think the truth is that I took my eye off the ball and didn’t notice that it had dropped down to 6.3 on the close shot. Also, with my 105mm, its quite long when focussed to 1:1 and I try not to let the shutter speed drop too much to avoid shake. Many thanks for the input on PS Elements aswell – that’s very useful and…. decision made!

    cheers again
