Hi John,
If I’d taken this I’d be right chuffed.
The horizon police might have a very small gripe but that’s easily fixed.
The bottom section may be a little black but you don’t need me to tell you that &
maybe it looks better that way.Nice sky.
It’s a good place for changing colours. I hope the owners of those boats don’t start
charging model fees or I’d be banjaxed.I see 5D Mk2’s starting to pop up around the place now. How is yours performing compared
to the 40D? Sorry probably not a question for this thread.Well done with the photo.
John.
nfl-fanParticipantCheers John, I just did a quick edit a hope to have sorted out that horizon. It’s very hard to get them right down The Burrow whatever way the land and water meet.
Great location for sunset on the East Coast (cheers IWF for showing me this spot) and those boats really make the scene, it’d be lost without them.
5D Mk II… I’m not convinced that’s its a major upgrade. Rarely use the Live View. Never use the Video. The high ISO capabilities aren’t bad. I like the ISO 50 feature. The images it produces are massive, they drive the PC demented. Amazing when you zoom into 100% on an image though… the detail is out of this world, these small web reductions just don’t do it any justice at all. You’d see a small fly on a boat when viewed at 100% and larger.

5faytheParticipantThanks John,
5D sounds good. It seems the 40D is developing a bit of a reputation
for being a very good machine.I note the odd rumbling from people who rushed to upgrade from 40D to
50D wondering whether the decision was wise.Anyway time to go try earn a living.
Cheers,
John.
DeeboParticipantHi John
Thats a cracking image, One that I would like to own.
Not sure which crop works best for me, I really like the dark sea at the bottom when cropped from the top, but I really like the light pastel colours from cropping the dark sea. Its a hard one to choose. The new camera sounds great. Thinking hard about an upgrade myself.
Deedar_dParticipantGreat shot, personally I’d crop out the darkness at the bottom. Think the focus should be on the great colours in the sky….
Liam2673ParticipantI would crop out the horizon and boats and have an installation type diptych, a la Francis Bacon, featuring clouds and sea.
Eamo.
thedarkroomParticipantSee you’re sticking with the centred horizon again. Really like this shot, nice and serene, lovely tonal range. I would probably consider cropping out some of that big expanse at the bottom but otherwise nothing else.
Sure you wouldn’t like to change for a Nikon, those Canons will never catch on. :D
nfl-fanParticipantI’m off home for the evening now so just a quick thanks to everyone for their feedback.
I think I purposely left in the dark bits to keep the horizon dead centre, so everything would be 50/50, balance and all that. Just to be odd n’ akward too.
Cheers again.
JrichiehatchMemberI wouldn’t normal go for the 50/50 spilt with the horizon but I think you just about get
away with it here. Nice natural tones but maybe the bottom left is just a bit too dark.As for the 5D2… I’d be with you on everything except the Live View. I never thought I’d
be bothered using it but recently I have started using i t more and more. Did a few pano’s
with the 85mm and used the live view to focus. Very very helpful to be able to zoom in x10
and nail the focus. Persist with it and you’ll start to like it…. especially for tripod work…!Richie
RobMemberVery nice John…
I happen to like 50/50 splits compositionally; they can work very well indeed,
particularly with the square format as our own Mick451 has demonstrated often
enough…It does work well here too, though I do find the immediate foreground a tad dark.
Perhaps an equal crop of a couple of centimeters from both top and bottom would
work, and you’d keep your 50/50…nfl-fanParticipantThanks lads.
I’m going to look at brightening up the foreground a bit and if that doesn’t work then a crop.
Cheers
Jb318ispParticipantnfl-fanParticipantThanks Brendan.
Richie – reading back on your 5D comments I never thought about using the zoom to ensure focus. I do use the live view from time to time but just for awkward composition type stuff, must give the zoom a try.
MartinParticipantLooks very nice Mr General Chat, would be well happy with this also, cant suggest anything to improve, just print it and see how it looks
