    C&C are appreciated as always

I was just experimenting with photoshop B&W conversion :)

    Thanks,

I think its a good capture, you got nice little catchlights in the eyes. I get the feeling from his position that he’s probably doing something with his arms and legs … and I’m curious to see what he’s doing :)

Direct flash seldom makes for pleasing photographs as it leads to big catch lights right in the centre of the eye (usually leads to red eye, but you did really well not to get it in this one) as well as harsh shadows, which you can see here below the childs chin. If you only have the flash which is built into your camera, try putting a white piece of card in front of it, to bounce the flash upwards – it will help your shots enormously. Also, when you’re shooting people, especially kids it really helps to have them either totally engrossed in something (looking at a toy that’s in the frame) or else straight at the camera. The fact that he’s not doing either here detracts from the shot a little, as does not shooting from his eye level.

But these are just niggly little things. All in all, exposure, colour and sharpness are good and the kid looks relaxed and happy. If you work on some of the finer technical points you’ll be taking cracking shots in no time.

I think the lighting, whilst a little flat, is more than acceptable here and the exposure looks good to me.

My biggest complaint about the image is that you’ve placed the eyes on the horizontal centre of the image and the nose on the vertical centre. The image lacks impact as a result. Try recomposing it by cropping it – cut off the top of his head and while you’re at it, rotate the image about 5?-10? clockwise and observe the effect of these two minor changes.

Thanks for your comments, they are all noted and will be in my mind in next attempt :)

BTW this photo was taken with flash attached to the camera and bounced from white ceiling.

    Thanks again,

What do ya think about B&W version of the image. Added 2 adjustment layers > Hue/Saturation and added some brightness & contrast.

    Thanks,
    Unal

b+w version is a bit too grey, ie whites should be white. Increasing contrast should improve it.

Yeah, I agree with Mark. There are about 100000000000 different ways of converting an image to B&W and for the most part, desaturating an image tends to be one of the poorer ones. Also, I know you didn’t specify it, but I’d also stay away from the brightness/contrast slider adjustments in Photoshop. Try using levels (or curves if you’re comfortable with them) to make these adjustments instead. All in all, the lighting was a little flat in the first colour one, so it’s not going to make for a terribly dramatic B&W shot really as the kids face will be all one tone (no shadow). I’d stick with colour on this one personally.

    Hey
Maybe next time try and get the childs arms together under his tummy as it will support him and it will look composed. Then crop portrait style with a 45 degree angle. Very tough shot to do as children wont always do what you want them to do,otherwise good attempt.
