I see that most of you do weddings, but are here any journalists? (sport or general)

I’d consider myself a freelance, as in I work for the papers sometimes, but not a journalist.

    Why do you ask?

There are plenty of photographers working for papers and with sporting organisations on the site

I’m a sports photographer, but certainly not a journalist.

I´m looking for some advice how to start working for some newspapers (even as a freelancer).

Approach your local paper with some sample images and see what they think, and whether they’d be willing to use you. Than, work out their rates and agree on a payment schedule. Most papers have one if not two photographers whom they use on a regular basis, so getting the foot in the door and getting your pics published and more importantly paid for may be a wee bit easier said than done…..

For instance, a local paper down here (which will remain nameless) uses its staff photographer as the papers picture editor. Makes great financial sense on their part, but a nightmare for freelancers like me who may have been at the same event as their staff photographer, and may even have better quality stuff than they have, but he has the final say on it, and if we don’t get published, we don’t get paid. And when we do get published, rates down here are in the region of €10 per pic and they keep you waiting for your money. So, its a race to the bottom all round. If I didn’t love taking pictures I honestly would be certifiable to even consider this as an occupation. At this point, I don’t even work for the papers, I take pics for local people and organisations and they pay me to stick them in the paper. As long as the staffer doesen’t feel threatened, the pics get in the paper, and the paper doesen’t need to pay me (which suits me)

Don’t under estimate parish politics in regards to the local papers especially. National dailies not so much. My two cents? By all means be a freelancer, but do not, and i repeat do not rely on it for a liveable wage for a long time, unless you are especially lucky (jammy) to find an opening with some publication that hasen’t been already filled by the several hundred other freelancers in your position.

Go for it, hopefully it will work out for you. Just what I have encountered, hopefully makes a bit of sense.

    Hi,

Depending on where you are based, I might be able to send some work your way for local papers across Dublin.
Send me a PM and I’ll fill you in on the details.
