Thanks for all your responses to this lads… Lots of varied opinions I see, but I would expect that. I don’t think I would travel outside Ireland to get it though, Dubai or the States is a long way away if I ended up with problems!
I’m only 30 mins from the Galway Clinic, so that is a great comfort feeling… :)SteveDParticipantVanessa,
This is an option which I had considered in the past. However, the risk of losing my sight (no matter how remote) was too much for me to deal with!
Instead, I went for ‘night & day’ contact lenses. I put them in at the start of the month and they don’t come out at all for 30 days. You sleep in them, and after about 30 seconds of blinking when you wake up, you will have perfect vision for the rest of day!
They work out at about £1 per day, so your operation would pay for close to 10 years worth of lenses!.
Don’t risk it.
Steve
Vanessa kennedyMemberThanks Steve – I actually wore those Day & Night lens for a few months. They were just ok for me. The best thing was no hassle with removing them & cleaning etc before bed… But in the mornings it took ages for my vision to settle down and by the time evening came my eyes just felt really tired with them..
I appreciate what you’re saying though – we only get one set of eyes! :wink:I will just have to see how this consultation goes… I might not even be suitable (knowing me I probably have some wonky shaped eyes or something!)
Thanks a mill :)
BMParticipantHi Vanessa
I considered this very seriously a few years back. There is a private specialist in Belfast who is highly regarded and I had my initial appointment with him. Anyway, I didn’t go for it for 1 simple reason: I would have ended up with glasses for reading. As we get older, we invariably all need assistance with reading. Those of us who wear glasses for distance, typically don’t need reading glasses until much later than others. So, I would have had my distance vision fixed, but then need glasses for reading. Considering that I sit in front of a computer for a large portion of my day and the fact that my presecription was never that bad (-1), the procedure was not really my best option.
In any case, make sure to let us know how you get on.
FintanParticipantMy wife often says she’d love to get this operation as she’s sick of daily disposable lenses and glasses. I’ve done a bit of research on it and one of the things I dont really like the sound of is it apparently can affect your night vision. Some police and fire departments dont like their people having laser surgery for this reason alledgedly [so google tells me]. If this could impair driving on dark evenings or at night, I’d be inclined to give it a miss.
JMcLParticipantI know a few people who’ve had it done, and all are very happy, though in one case I think he wasn’t corrected completely (I’m basing this through looking through his camera viewfinder with my glasses on and everything being blurred). I’m tempted myself, as my vision is awful, but I keep holding back for fear of the consequences. As well as the dry eye thing, I’ve read of problems with night vision, which didn’t sound like fun. That said I’ll probably get them done eventually.
€4620 sounds a bit steep. A friend got them done down here in Waterford a while back, and I think it was a lot less than that, though I may be imagining this. It’d be worth checking out the price elsewhere in the country though. Also I’m pretty sure this qualifies for a med 1 tax claim, which takes the sting out a bit (or at least the financial sting)
Keep us posted, I’m always interested in hearing peoples experiences!

HelenMParticipantBig decision Vanessa. I too have heard of so many success stories and there’s nothing to suggest you would be any different. However, I work for an optician and we have on a fairly regular basis patients coming to us whose laser correction has left them with problems and in some cases worse eyesight than before. I guess it’s like everything in life, you do your research and make your decision based on that. All the very best, keep us updated.
MartinOCParticipantHi Vanessa,
I too know a few people for who it worked great, they loved it.
I wear glasses some days and daily contacts the other days but I would not get the operation for myself. It is most important to look at the statistics and the downside risks more than the anecdotal evidence.
I have an article I downloaded from the New York Times on the subject that was printed recently, it is quite interesting.
It was written by someone for whom it didn’t work out, if you wish pm me and I’ll email it to you.Either way, best of luck!

Vanessa kennedyMemberThanks everyone for all your thoughts on this, and also thanks to the PI members who sent me PM too. Consultation is tomorrow so I guess it all depends on how that goes (Keep your fingers crossed for me, eh  )
Will keep ye posted :)
GizzoParticipantGCPParticipantsm323fMemberVanessa kennedyMemberVanessa kennedyMemberWell, I am just back from my assessment in Galway – Got on really well in all the tests and am considered to be an ideal candidate. Have decided to go ahead and have booked for the procedure on Tues July 15th… :)
