Here’s the thing:
I’ve to drive from Kells to Castlebar on St Patrick’s Day for a show
that evening, and I’m considering leaving early afternoon to maybe
take in a bit of photography along the way. I’d appreciate any tips
for locations with strong scenic or historical interest along the route.
Anyone from around Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford, Mayo, etc?Rob.
jb7ParticipantIf you’re passing Clerys,
have a look at the new Spire in the middle of O’Connell Street-j
RobMemberExcellent Joseph. After seeing that, I just
might take a little detour. Nice aspect,
not expected.Rob.
ReneMemberDid you say new spire? LOL In Westmeath go to Fore Abbey, shot on my site, great place. Go through Mulligar to Castlepollard, then 10 minutes drive from there….
Jay KingParticipantSorry Rob, can’t recommend anything off the top of my head…! Just reading this and saw Joseph’s photo…
really like it, nice idea and well cropped. Curious too as to what the ‘Jesus’ bit is!?
joe_elwayParticipantCheck out: http://www.heritageireland.ie/
There’s a listing of OPW managed sites (historic, cultural, etc) there.
I picked up an OPW map a year or so back (free at their managed sites) and keep it in the car. It’s handy if you ever are on the road and have some time to spare.
jb7ParticipantMaybe that wasn’t too much help-
I took that off the top of a tour bus last week as it sped over the speed bumps beside the spire-
the ‘jesus’ is a sticker attached to the spire,
that just crept in to the bopttom of the frame-I reckon I’ll be back to do this one properly sometime,
from a tripod, at zero mphj
fishjam45ParticipantRob,
If you take a detour through Athlone Town you’ve got Lough Rea which is a great spot.
Otherwise if you travel through Roscommon you should see a lot of flooded fields which have formed temporary lakes which may surprise with great photo opportunities. Hope this helps.
I’ll be heading down that direction myself this weekend, hope to get some good shots.
Happy Shooting!
RobMemberCheers folks for the replies, a few options there
for me. Been to Fore many times as it’s not that far from
where I live, so that’s definitely an option. I must check
the OPW site also once I’ve planned my route. Hopefully
I can make a day of it. I don’t need to be in Castlebar
until 1 p.m. for rehearsals, so if I leave nice and early
I might be able to take in a few locations…Thanks again
Rob.
thomasMemberthere’s a lake just past mullingar, on the left hand side. Ive never stopped there myself, but its a nice spot and you may get something.
in mayo, check out Pontoon if you have the time, follow the signs for Foxford. in foxford go over the bridge on the ballina rd and take the first left (it should all be signposted and on a map) a couple of miles on the left hand side there’s a lake, lough Cullin there’s three little beaches with car parking, its real nice area
carry on again take the left at the T junction, just past the pontoon bridge hotel there’s a bridge with a nice view of lough Conn on the right
continue on and the road goes along by the lake and healys hotel (a nice place to stop off for a coffee and take in the view outside) …continue on and there’s a road a mile or two on the left with a sign for Parke, go down there for 4/5 miles (the road ain’t great) though Parke (where i live) until you get to a round tower with a ruined church attached.
carry on and follow the signs to castlebarin castlebar theres a lake with a view of croagh Patrick in the distance, just ask a local for directions to the lake
it probably will be pissing it down anyway :)
hope that all helps
Thomas
RobMemberCheers Thomas. I know Lough Sheever at Mullingar, some nice views around there,
but it’s good to get some pointers for Mayo. Looking forward to all the rain… :lol:Rob.
