Anyone been to Achill Island
-
Leftist RhetoricParticipant
Heading there today/tomorrow with my camera and a few rolls of Ilford FP4. Can anyone recommend some good vantage points? Hoping for some dramtaic weather!
Madra RuaParticipantThe first choice has to be Keem Bay, at the western end of the island, and from there up to the cliffs and a walk out to Achill head.
Another highlight is the ‘Atlantic Drive’ from Achill Sound to Dooega.
From Keel Beach and Dooagh you have a great view of the Cliffs of Meenawn.
There is also a road leading up to a view point on the hill above the cliffs.Slievemore and Doogort on the north coast are also nice locations.
Leftist RhetoricParticipantMadra RuaParticipantThey’re old shots from a trip I did some years back in May.
We had the most amazing weather.
The Atlanic was like a mirror and when we walked towards Achill Head I spotted two Orcas travelling past the headland towards Belmullet.Enjoy your trip :D
gerardkParticipantI would second that – Keel bay is fantastic. Theres also a deserted village out that way somewhere from what I remember, on the side of a mountain near a quarry where the inhabitants upped and left and all the remains of the houses still stand. Worth checking out in my opinion.

Oh dear, forgot all about that one. You are absolutely rght, Gerard.
The abandoned village at the foot of Slieve Mor is another must on Achill.
It’s beyond the cemetary on the road from Keel to Doogort.gerardkParticipantYes – that abandoned mine and village would look excellent – I would love to do them some at a full moon or maybe in IR just to enhance the other worldliness of them. Great locations there – keel bay itself is gorgeous too – one of my favourite places anywhere.

Do you mean Keel or Keem?
Keel is the townland and long beach in the middle of the island.
Keem is the hidden cove and beach at the far end.
Easily confused with two names like that.digitalfotomanParticipantYou wont go wrong in Achill GCP and myself spent a day there last year and got some graeat results.

Easily confused with two names like that. You could be right there – its been a good few years.
jlangParticipantWas there myself last weekend, primarily to run the half marathon, but got some pictures on the Friday. Highly recommend Keem and the hills above. Also the beaches on the North side of the island and the bogs in the middle. Didn’t make it down the Atlantic Road to the South, but the views across to the high cliffs there from Keel were something else. Anyway, you can’t turn around without seeing a photo opportunity.
