    Hi Merv,

I haven’t purchased from these people but I do use e-bay quite a bit. It seems strange to me that they charge almost $100 shipping, that it takes 5+ days to deliver and payment is made in dollars, all for an item based in Ireland. The company are likely to be 100% Ok but my point is, the item could end up being shipped from the USA. in which case you will be nailed for import duties, on that price of lens it could be a nice sum.

Sorry for being Negative but I have been caught for Import duties in the past.

Click on the link “Ask seller a question” and ask him what the $100 is for and explain you are in Ireland. It could be for insurance as the lens costs EUR 4,882.49. He might do the shipping cheaper if your both in Ireland

Or use the “Contact member” link to send him a private message. Even ask him to ring you if hes in Ireland (send him your number). At over 4 grand he wont mind a phone call if its legit which it most probably is. Feedback is 100% positive on 229 items which is good

Please let us know if you get any response or ordered and got the lens… I fancy that sigma 120-300 at that price. Thanks, Zoltan

They look pretty legit from here. Their feedback is excellent and it is all on items similar to those they have listed for sale.

It is listed in USD because Merv was browsing on ebay.com. They are actually listed in euro.

They have some great prices there. 70-200 2.8 L IS for ?985 shipped. That’s on a par with the ebay prices from Hong Kong.

I’ve seen this type of thing before but I can’t for the life of me find an example. AFAIK they register in Ireland but actually deal from HK or out in that direction. I had the occasion to look for a bike a couple of years ago and this was what was happening. Why they would do this is beyond me but the bike I was looking at ended up being a scam that was removed after a few hours.

As Martin said contact them but also have a look at their feedback. They seem to have quite a lot of feedback (I haven’t checked it) which is a positive sign. Check the items and the buyers to see if they’re genuine. For such an item at that price loading P&P seems a bit futile. Now, if a cheap item was loaded in P&P I’d expect it.

    I’d proceed with caution.

Had a quick look through some of their feedback and they do ship from Hong Kong, not Ireland, as pointed out by Alan. Not really a problem as such, but it always annoys me when a company says they are UK or Irish based when they are obviously not. You may or may not get stung for import duty. It usually depends on the way the package is declared. But you’d have to assume you will and factor in to the price. Couple of comments re delivery on this page:

Oh, if they’re shipping from Hong Kong, I’d keep my wits about me. I looked briefly and missed that. If they’re not being transparent about that, then I’d be wary of the rest of their dealings. Saying that, it could be hassle free and you’ll pick up a bargain.

Well, at the top they state the items are located in Athboy !

Later on, they say they are shipped via their ‘International Warehouse’ with no indication of where this is (presumably Hong Kong).

I am inclined to report them to ebay, as they have a policy against misrepresenting where goods are actually being sold from.

If you’re going to be getting the goods from HK anyway, you’re probably better off using one of the fairly established and reliable ones like Digital Rev, Kea and URGalaxy etc.

I send them an ebay email to state I was in ireland and would like to collect the item from Athboy, I got a response to say all their product is shipped direct, i.e. not via Athboy. They did’nt state from where, but we’re all guessing the far east.

I’m not going to go for it. The risk of geting hit with Duty and Vat on one of these big puppies would push it over the edge for me, (and they are pricey enough to start with!).

    Many thanks!

those chaps r based in Hong Kong, this was only a trick registering themselves as Irelands based seller, they were quite rude when I emailed them asking about their real location, the man there start rumbling about being european reselller with warehouses based in HK bla bla, in short, if you fall to buying some expensive gear from them, there’s a high possible risk to be hit with VAT, customs duties, etc, if you ever decide to buy from HK, choose descent ebayers, kea-photo, urgalaxy, them might even assist you on reducing all taxes to minimum or even avooid them at all.

I would also advise caution. All of their pics are watermarked “Hong Kong Direct” which suggests all is not what it seems. Sure they might provide a service but any honest retailer will tell it the way it is when asked, unless they’re in fear of being investigated.

Depending on what courier service they use and the type of account they have, you may get stung for customs. The one time I used a different HK seller (DZone2) from my usual (URGalaxy) they used DHL, which was followed by a customs letter.

URGalaxy have always delivered within 3 days of ordering using FedEx International Business Priority, and no customs ever. It is customs-cleared (means that customs are not allowed to open the box), and declared as repairs not for resale at a low value. You take your chances with that I suppose.

I can highly recommend URGalaxy. Contact them directly if you’re after stuff they’ve not listed in eBay. Response is usually quick (hours) and I can’t fault their service (used them about 4 or 5 times by now).

FYI a quick quote for FedEx from HK to Ireland is 85 GBP for a 5kg package.
