Anyone using a stock library?
-
petercoxMember
I’m considering submitting to one of the big stock libraries, Getty, Corbis et al.
Anyone here represented by an agency? If so, got any recommendations?
Cheers,
PetermervifwdcParticipantI’m interestred in responses here too.
I’ve looked into it, and am submitting some stuff to photoshelter. They are trying to become the new kid on the block, and it might be good to be in early. I’m in the process of submitting some stuff, and only have 7 images up so far.
I’m avoiding the microstock sites, as I’ve not go the time to submit 1000 shots per day to play the numbers game!

GfoxParticipantI think this should be made a sticky, and we can compile a list of comprehensive information as its a topic that will come up a lot.
carstenkriegerParticipantHi Peter,
long time no hear…
I am with a medium sized stock library (ARCO DIGITAL IMAGES) but have recently been approached by ALAMY (who offer very good conditions by the way). Working with a stock library is always worth a try (but you’re usually stuck with them for a few years if you sign up), the problem with our line of work is that it’s very limited (picture buyers don’t need that many images of Irish landscapes) and the sales/income won’t be big (especially as there are royalty free collections at very low prices around). If you want to make a living from stock photography travel / wildlife or business themes are probably the most income generating.
I’ll drop you an email these days – maybe we’ll be able to arrange another photo trip.

Thanks for the information. Stock was always something I didn’t figure was worth the effort these days, but my attitude is now that I may as well do it. It’s not going to cost me anything, after all.Yes, do get in touch. The last trip we planned seemed to fizzle out, let’s see if we can get another one started.

GfoxParticipantAnyone have more info on this? What stock sites they use and what ones are good for Irish photos?
What about this one? http://www.agefotostock.com/age/ingles/phco01b.asp
Apperently imagefile us themKeithJonesParticipantHi,
I’ve written about Microstock on Squidoo here : http://www.squidoo.com/microstockinfo
I think the whole Microstock basis is poor with just a * very * few photographers making any decent money at all.
They tend to be shooting people in family and business situations.
Internet picture theft is now so huge that the whole microstock business model is very poor.I do not have any pictures with any microstock agency but may put a few with Bigstockphoto.
iStockphoto is owned by Getty who are rumoured in the trade to be looking for a buyer themselves.
My predictions of what would happen (10 years ago) at a stock Photo conference in New York were laughed off the stage !
I predicted the gross decline in stock photography due to Royalty Free .. Microstock has speeded this up as users become used to buying photos for a couple of dollars !Digital cameras have compounded this and now anyone can with practice take usable pictures. – Thats not a bad thing of course
I am going to put my stock with Alamy. The only thing that prevented me earlier was the huge file sizes they want and my lack of broadband until now.

Getty were bought a few weeks back..
KeithJonesParticipantI knew Getty were being sold but didn’t know it had happened yet…
THere’s a bit about it at Stockphototalk http://www.stockphototalk.com/phototalk/Looks like its a German Private Investor outfit.
Anyone thinking of putting pictures with a stock library should really read Stockphototalk (I’m not connected with them ) as they seem to get all the latest news quickly (mostly by press releases )
Have a look through the back files there and you’ll find lots about most people.
The whole stock business is very much in a state of flux and has been for a couple of years.
